In the post made by Kastamonu Provincial Health Directorate on the occasion of Breast Cancer Awareness and Awareness Month, the importance of early diagnosis was emphasized. In the post, Medical Oncology Specialist Uzm. Dr. Erkan Özcan's statements were included. Stating that breast cancer can be seen in 1 out of every 8 women worldwide, Specialist Uzm. Dr. Erkan Özcan emphasized that 98 percent of patients can be diagnosed early thanks to screening programs. Emphasizing that the disease can be defeated quickly thanks to early diagnosis, Özcan said that tests can be performed every year in KETEM and hospitals.
Noting that women should perform breast self-examination every month, Özcan said, “As it is known, breast cancer is the most common type of breast cancer in women in our country and in the world. The most common reason for application is the complaint of mass and swelling in the breast. In addition, it also occurs with complaints such as pulling in the breast and nipple. Of course, it is not necessary to apply when complaints occur. Breast cancer is a type of cancer that has been subjected to national and international cancer screening programs due to its high incidence and the possibility of 1 in 8 women being affected by breast cancer for life. In our country, annual physician examinations, especially in KETEM, screening programs with mammography once a year or every two years, and monthly self-examination are recommended within the scope of the screening program.”
Stating that early diagnosis of cancer is achieved in 90 percent of patients thanks to screening programs, Özcan said, “In early stage disease, cure can be achieved thanks to the treatments applied through surgery, medical oncology and radiation oncology, and this provides a disease-free life. But unfortunately, some of our patients come in the fourth stage. In this case, various targeted treatments are available. Thanks to these treatments, we can expect a better quality of life and life expectancy. Thanks to these treatments, we can control the disease. I want you to know that breast cancer can be detected at an early stage with screening programs, but the disease can be controlled with treatment at the metastatic stage.”
