Making a statement on 15 September World Lymphoma Awareness Day, Eskişehir Provincial Health Director Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yaşar Bildirici stated that it is vital to consult a health institution when unusual changes are noticed in the body and when there are unusual and persistent findings.
Provincial Director of Health Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yaşar Bildirici made a statement on the occasion of September 15 World Lymphoma Awareness Day and stated that the lymphatic system plays an important role in the body's fight against germs. Stating that lymphatic system cancer, which develops with the uncontrolled proliferation of cells called lymphocytes, is called 'Lymphoma', Bildirici said that approximately 7 thousand people are diagnosed with lymphoma every year in Turkey. She emphasized that lymphoma is among the top ten most common cancers among both men and women and accounts for 15 percent of childhood cancers.
Emphasizing the importance of early diagnosis on World Lymphoma Awareness Day, which was set to eliminate the lack of information about lymphoma disease, raise awareness and draw attention to the psychosocial difficulties faced by patients, Bildirici stated that the exact cause of lymphoma is unknown, but aging, gender, family history, exposure to certain chemicals, radiation, weakened immune system and some infections may constitute risk factors for the disease.
Bildirici stated that the most common symptom of lymphoma is painless lymph node swelling, which can be seen in the neck, armpit and groin areas. He also added that unexplained fever, weight loss, night sweats, fatigue and itchy skin are also among the symptoms of lymphoma. Stating that these symptoms may also be related to other diseases, Bildirici emphasized that people who experience such complaints should definitely consult a health institution.
Stating that although there is no accepted screening method for the early detection of lymphoma, it is vital to consult a health institution when unusual changes are noticed in the body and when there are unusual, persistent findings, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yaşar Bildirici emphasized that the findings noticed may not always indicate cancer, but based on the principle of “Early diagnosis and treatment saves lives”, the earlier the cancer is diagnosed, the more promising the results will be.
