Benign prostate enlargement is a condition that occurs when the prostate gland enlarges with age. Frequent and sudden urge to urinate
Stating that the symptoms of prostate enlargement may vary from person to person, Op. Dr. Hüseyin Akyıldız said, “Among the common symptoms of benign prostate enlargement; difficulty in starting urination, frequent urination, sudden urge to urinate, weakening in urine flow and dripping urine. There may also be problems such as inability to completely empty the urine in the bladder.”
Stating that rectal examination, urine and blood tests and PSA test are among the methods used in the diagnostic process, Op. Dr. Akyıldız said, “PSA test determines whether PSA levels in the blood increase in cases such as prostate enlargement, prostate cancer or infection. Urine flow rate test and measurement of residual amount after urination are other methods used in diagnosis. When necessary, advanced tests such as transrectal ultrasound and biopsy can also be performed.”
There are drug treatment and surgical options
Stating that the treatment of prostate enlargement is determined according to the patient's age, severity of symptoms and general health status, Op. Dr. Akyıldız said:
“Drug therapy or surgical methods may be preferred in the treatment of prostate enlargement. Alpha-blockers, 5-alpha reductase inhibitors and tadalafil group drugs can be used in drug treatment. The most commonly used surgical treatment option is TURP (Transurethral Resection), in which the enlarged part of the prostate gland is removed from the urinary tract. After the TURP procedure, a significant improvement is observed in the urinary complaints of the patients. Open prostate surgery can also be considered as an option in the treatment of enlarged prostate.”
