Erciyes University (ERU) Faculty of Medicine, Department of Neurology, Assoc. Prof. Recep Baydemir; “October is Stroke Awareness Month” in his statement; “The earlier the stroke treatment is started, the higher the chance of recovery,” he said.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Faculty Member Recep Baydemir made a statement in order to raise awareness about what needs to be done to prevent stroke and to draw attention to stroke; “We celebrate October 29 as World Stroke Day. Stroke is still the 3rd leading cause of death in the world. It ranks first among disabling diseases. Approximately 17 million people in the world have a stroke every year and 6 million of them lose their lives. While 1 person has a stroke every 2 seconds; 1 person dies from stroke every 6 seconds.”
“It is necessary to pay attention to the symptoms of stroke”
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Baydemir; “In stroke; sudden onset of unilateral weakness or numbness in the arms and legs, difficulty and impaired speech, facial asymmetry, double vision, imbalance and changes in the level of consciousness are among the symptoms. The primary methods to reduce the risk of stroke are blood pressure control, prevention of smoking, healthy nutrition, physical activity and exercise, and taking medications with the advice of a doctor. Since stroke is a condition that occurs suddenly in cerebrovascular diseases and requires very rapid treatment, it is necessary to apply to a health institution immediately.”
“The earlier stroke treatment is started, the higher the chance of recovery”
Baydemir mentioned that the earlier the stroke treatment is started, the higher the chance of recovery and that stroke has become a treatable disease with the new treatment methods developed in the last 20 years; “With the clot dissolving treatment given intravenously within the first 4.5 hours and the mechanical clot removal process applied in the first 6 hours, the death and disability rates due to the disease tend to decrease significantly, and approximately 2 million nerve cells lose their function in the blocked vessel area every minute. For this reason, the aim is; early recognition of stroke cases and directing them to appropriate advanced treatment centers and restoring circulation in the blocked vessel area as soon as possible.”
