Electronic cigarettes increase the risk of addiction and negatively affect the health of young generations

British doctors called on the government to ban e-cigarettes with different flavors, drawing attention to the potential health hazards of e-cigarettes with different flavors, bringing electronic cigarettes back to the agenda and opening the issue to discussion again. In Turkey, the recent occurrence of EVALI (e-cigarette-induced acute lung injury) disease in Turkey has led to serious concerns about the harmful effects of electronic cigarettes. In this context, Turkey Combat Association (TSSD) President Prof. Dr. Mustafa Aydın made statements about the effects and potential risks of electronic cigarettes on health. Commenting on the issue, Prof. Aydın said, “Electronic cigarettes, especially flavored varieties, can serve as a bridge to tobacco products by targeting young people and non-smokers. Flavored e-cigarettes can lead to health problems such as EVALI disease in the long term by increasing the habits and addictions of users. The British doctors' call for a ban on these products emphasizes the need for a careful approach to e-cigarette use, which is a global health problem.” Prof. Dr. Aydın warned that the widespread use of electronic cigarettes may increase tobacco addiction and encourage young people to use cigarettes. “In addition, the long-term effects of these products on health have not yet been fully revealed, so more research and regulation is needed,” he said.

“The effect of flavors misleads our youth”

Stating that electronic cigarettes have a high amount of aroma content, Prof. Dr. Aydın said, “These products, which are tried to be made attractive by adding various aromas, unfortunately mislead our society and young people. Even this flavor alone causes many problems, especially respiratory disorders and heart diseases. In this context, Turkey Combat Association (TSSD) President Prof. Dr. Mustafa Aydın made statements about the obacco products by targeting young people and non-smokers. Flavored e-cigarettes can lead to health problems such as EVALI disease in the long term by increasing the habits and addictions of users.  effects and potential risks of electronic cigarettes on health.

Prof. Dr. Aydın emphasized that such methods, which are used by those who want to quit smoking thinking that they are less harmful, actually cause another type of addiction and underlined that these products should be restricted because the long-term effects of e-cigarettes on health are not yet fully understood.

“The age of starting smoking is very low in our country”

Prof. Dr. Aydın stated that the age of starting smoking in Turkey has decreased until adolescence and drew attention to the fact that smoking is more common especially in the 14-17 age range. Prof. Aydın said, “The age of starting smoking in our country, I regret to say, has fallen very low. This situation brings many health problems. Smoking can have negative effects on young people's lung development, cardiovascular health and general physiological development. For this reason, various studies should be carried out to keep young people away from cigarettes and their derivatives.”

Prof. Dr. Mustafa Aydın concluded, “It should be the duty of all of us to protect our young people, whom we see as the guarantee of our future, from smoking and its derivatives. We need to continue social awareness and education activities, which are of great importance to reduce the use of such products among young people and to promote healthy living habits. In addition, parents, teachers, health professionals and various non-governmental organizations have a great role to play in this regard. The positive influence of these groups on young people plays a critical role in solving this problem.”
