Employee anxiety has not decreased in the last two years

Global problems such as economic conditions and the challenges of modern life permeate every aspect of life, increasing anxiety, stress and depression levels among workers. According to the data, anxiety ranked first in the interviews with psychologists in the last two years, followed by romantic relationships, depression, coping with stress and parent-child relationships.

At the end of a working day, it has become increasingly difficult for employees to put their head on the pillow free from anxiety and stress. Especially with the pandemic and the ongoing global uncertainties and economic crises, along with the problems in parent-child relationships or romantic relationships, employees have spent the last years with anxiety, depression and stress. Wellbees, the corporate wellbeing solution, analyzed the reasons why employees consulted Wellbees psychologists in the last two years.

According to the data covering the period between August 2022 and August 2024, the top five reasons why employees requested an appointment with the platform psychologists were anxiety, romantic relationships, depression, coping with stress and parent-child relationships. While these five topics accounted for 70 percent of all applications, anger management, work life and emotional nutrition stood out among other reasons for application.

Women apply for anxiety, men for romantic relationships

Women made up 71 percent of the employees who met with psychologists. Anxiety ranked first among the reasons for meeting with psychologists for women, while romantic relationships and marriage came first for men. Merve Gürsoy, one of the platform psychologists, pointed out that social roles are also effective in the fact that men see psychologists less than women.

Generation X and Z have the same reason for applying: Parent-child relationships

According to the platform's data, one of the common points between Generation X and Generation Z, who have many conflicts in business life, is the reasons for seeing a psychologist. Accordingly, Generations X and Z consult psychologists mostly about parent-child relationships. For Generation Y, on the other hand, romantic relationships and marriages are in the first place. Gürsoy explains this situation as follows: “Social interaction has a great impact on our lives. Since Generation X and Generation Z are in the same environment and are influenced by each other, their reasons for consulting a psychologist can be common. The situation is a little different with the Y generation. Because depending on the period they grew up in, their expectations and awareness vary significantly compared to Generation X and Z.”

“Unmanageable situations and uncertainties increase anxiety”

Stating that the uncertainties on the world's agenda have increased, especially with the pandemic, Psychologist Gürsoy said, “While the pandemic process triggered people's health concerns, natural disasters such as earthquakes increased the fear of death and the fear of losing loved ones. The fear of unemployment that comes with economic crises has also created a great source of stress on employees. The mental health of individuals who cannot cope with these uncertainties, which are out of their control, is negatively affected and a process leading to depression can be experienced.” Gürsoy continued as follows: “In a period when employees' concerns are so high, companies need to take action. In a work environment where economic concerns are reduced, well-being practices are implemented, and generational conflicts end, employees' anxiety decreases while their happiness and loyalty to their workplaces increase.”
