Birten Gökalp, Tunceli State Hospital Organ and Tissue Transplant Coordinator, made statements due to November 3-9 Organ Donation Week. Noting that in order to donate organs, it is necessary to be over the age of 18, to be mentally stable and to fill out the donation form in the presence of two witnesses, Gökalp stated that in addition to these, the person must also have the permission of the family after death. Giving information about the organs that can be donated, Gökalp said: “Heart, kidney, liver, lung, pancreas, small and large intestine, upper and lower extremities, upper and lower respiratory tract and cornea can be donated. The Presidency of Religious Affairs also declared that organ donation is permissible on March 6, 1980.
Emphasizing the importance of organ donation, Gökalp said, “Thousands of people die every year while waiting for organ transplantation. Every year, thousands of organs that could be transplanted are buried in the ground along with the hopes of those waiting for transplantation. Every ten minutes, one person in the world suffers from organ failure and every 17 minutes, one person dies due to organ failure. Let's not forget that a donated organ is a person holding on to life.”
