Expert warned: “Don't wear fake sunglasses”

Siirt Training and Research Hospital Ophthalmology Specialist Dr. Muhammed Burak Akkoyun warned about sunglasses, which are in demand in the summer months, and said that fake sunglasses can cause permanent eye diseases.

Stating that there are rays that have various damages to the eye called ultraviolet rays in the sun's rays, Ophthalmologist Dr. Muhammed Burak Akkoyun said, “These rays can have various harmful effects on the eyes, especially in the summer months, especially in provinces like Siirt, where sun rays are very intense and air temperatures are very high. Between 10.00 and 15.00 during the day are the hours when we are most exposed to ultraviolet rays.

Stating that ultraviolet rays damage the eye, Dr. Akkoyun said, “It can leave various effects on both the cornea and the back of the eye, which we call the retina. It can cause progressive vision loss in the eye, which we call yellow spot disease, as well as pterygium disease, which is popularly called eye flesh, various eye diseases in the cornea and different conditions that can progress with vision loss. How can we protect ourselves from ultraviolet rays? A person receives 70 percent of ultraviolet rays in the first 30 years of life. These are the periods when we are most exposed to ultraviolet rays, when we are most exposed to the outside, when we are traveling and interacting with the environment. We should teach our children the habit of wearing sunglasses after the age of 15, as well as the habit of using hats in hot weather. Unbranded, poor quality sunglasses that look like sunglasses but do not actually protect the eyes may be preferred just because the price is affordable in the society. However, these sunglasses, which are thought to protect from the sun's rays, actually cause more damage to the eye because they do not protect it. The eye receives more ultraviolet rays and can cause various eye diseases over the years. For this reason, we always advise our people and patients to prefer quality sunglasses that are refractive against ultraviolet rays and protective from harmful rays that may affect the eye under the control of an ophthalmologist and by talking to opticians about this issue.

Stating that attention should be paid especially to the glasses sold on the internet, Optician Ömer Alkaş said, “Especially recently, there have been many cases of encountering fake glasses in sunglasses sold on the internet. I would like to warn our citizens especially about this issue. The majority of the glasses sold on the internet are fake and it is almost impossible to distinguish them from the real ones. Because they do exactly the same. They also give the warranty certificate. Warranty certificates are also fake. Companies that are opened and closed every day are companies under the stairs. I definitely invite our citizens not to buy sunglasses online because one of our biggest capital is the eye. It is not worth risking our eyes for a very small amount. Because unfortunately, there is no compensation and backup for the eye,'' he said.
