Expert warned: “Pneumonia is as deadly as it is contagious”

Chest Diseases Department Specialist Doctor Büşra Çimen Şeker, who warned against possible pneumonia cases that may increase with the cooling of the weather, said, “Pneumonia is a disease that can be fatal. This risk may be higher in chronic patients.”

Büşra Çimen Şeker, a specialist in the Department of Chest Diseases at Izzet Baysal State Hospital, warned against pneumonia, the incidence of which has started to increase with the cooling of the weather. Underlining that Pneumonia (Pneumonia) is a disease that can be fatal, Uzm. Dr. Şeker called on patients with risk factors to be more careful.

“Pneumonia is a contagious disease”

Stating that pneumonia is a contagious disease, Uzm. Dr. Büşra Çimen Şeker said, “Pneumonia is a contagious disease. People who are in close contact with the sick person, who use the same utensils such as forks, spoons, plates or personal items such as towels, etc., those who are exposed to microorganisms as a result of coughing or sneezing in the same environment are at risk. There is no rule that just because a patient is infected with a microorganism, that patient will get pneumonia. The microorganism must first pass through the filter of the patient's immune system. For this reason, not everyone who gets the microorganism will get pneumonia. It depends on the patient's condition.”

“We do different treatments”

Stating that they apply different treatment methods according to the patient's condition for treatment in case of pneumonia, Uzm. Dr. Şeker said, “In case of pneumonia that does not improve, we, as physicians, re-evaluate the situation. If the patient has what we call community-acquired pneumonia, we do different treatments for community-transmitted, hospital-acquired infections. When we do not see a response in the patient when we start community-acquired treatment, we gradually expand our antibiotic spectrum according to different organisms. Again, is there an underlying cancer condition in pneumonia that does not heal? Is there a condition that suppresses the immune system? Why is our patient not getting better? Or could it be a case of tuberculosis? We need to review these. In general, our recovery rates are high with treatment, but we should also consider the current conditions in patients who do not recover.”

“Pneumonia is a disease that can be fatal”

Stating that pneumonia can be fatal, Uzm. Dr. Şeker said, “Pneumonia is a disease that can be fatal. This is especially related to the patient's existing chronic diseases. If our patient has a number of chronic diseases, it is necessary to be more careful in patients with risk factors. Because it is a lung infection, the patient may develop respiratory failure. Apart from this, the sudden and rapid response, the immune response, which occurs when the bacteria mixes into the patient's blood, can worsen the week and make it an intensive care unit. In people with chronic diseases, pneumonia is more severe and this can lead to serious complications such as respiratory failure. Apart from this, there may be a situation such as myocarditis, in which the patient's existing microorganism, which we call myocarditis, mixes with the blood and affects the heart. It can be fatal for these reasons,” he said.

“Cleaning is very important in pneumonia”

Stating that cleanliness is very important against pneumonia, Uzm. Dr. Büşra Çimen Şeker said, “The precautions to be taken against pneumonia are as follows, especially cleaning is very important in pneumonia. Hand hygiene, body hygiene, personal hygiene, cleanliness of the environment we are in and regular ventilation of indoor environments are very important. Smoking and alcohol use should be reduced or eliminated if possible, or reduced if not possible. Keeping chronic diseases under control, regular check-ups of patients and stopping the progression of chronic diseases and pneumonia vaccines are also very important.”
