Niğde Provincial Health Director Uzm. Dr. Bahadır Karaca made warnings about prostate cancer.
Explaining what should be considered to protect against prostate cancer, which maintains its importance with its frequency in men, Uzm. Dr. Bahadır Karaca drew attention to the fact that a diet rich in saturated fat, red meat but poor in vegetables and fruits can increase the risk of prostate cancer.
Karaca made a statement about prostate cancer; “The prostate is a gland in the male reproductive system, located just below the bladder, through which the urinary duct passes. It is about the size of a walnut in normal condition. As men get older, the prostate gland may enlarge. An enlarged prostate can block the flow of urine from the bladder and cause other problems. Enlargement alone is not a sign of cancer. An enlarged prostate without cancer cells is called benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH). Although BPH is not a cancer, surgery may be needed to correct the discomfort it causes. In prostate cancer, cancer cells are observed in the prostate gland. Prostate cancer, which occurs more frequently with aging, maintains its importance with an incidence of 39.1 per 100,000 among male cancers in our country as in many countries of the world. “ he said.
Explaining the factors that may affect men's risk of developing prostate cancer, Karaca stated that prostate cancer is rare in men under the age of 40, and that the risk of prostate cancer begins to increase rapidly after the age of 50.
“Genetic predisposition is important in developing prostate cancer”
Stating that 6 out of every 10 cases of prostate cancer are seen in men older than 65, Karaca said, “Having a father or brother with prostate cancer more than doubles a man's risk of developing this disease. The risk is also higher in men with more than one relative diagnosed with prostate cancer at a young age. There are reports that a diet rich in saturated fats and red meat and low in vegetables and fruits may increase the risk of prostate cancer. Exposure to certain chemicals may increase the risk.”
Explaining the symptoms of prostate cancer, which does not give any symptoms in the early stage, Karaca stated that slow or weak urine flow, the need to urinate more often, especially at night, the presence of blood in the urine, hip, spine, rib pain, weakness or numbness in the legs or feet, and even loss of bladder or bowel control due to the cancer mass pressing on the spinal cord are among the symptoms.
“It is Possible to Reduce the Risk of Prostate Cancer ”
Pointing out that the risk of developing cancer can be reduced by making lifestyle changes, Karaca said that the risk can be reduced by quitting smoking, maintaining a healthy body weight, exercising regularly and eating a healthy, balanced diet.
