Expert warns: Hot weather causes skin cancer

Siirt Provincial Directorate of Health Directorate Head of Health Services Emergency Medicine Specialist Dr. Zübeyde Albayrak pointed out that while thermometers show 40 degrees, extreme heat causes premature aging and skin cancer.

Emergency Medicine Specialist Dr. Zübeyde Albayrak said that the increasing heat in the city causes premature aging and skin cancer. Stating that extreme temperatures bring health problems, Dr. Albayrak noted that when the increasing ambient temperature exceeds the body temperature, the body absorbs the heat in the environment and the body temperature starts to increase. Stating that in this newly developing situation, metabolism activates some mechanisms to adapt to this situation, Dr. Albayrak said, “Sweating is one of these mechanisms. However, sweating alone is not always a sufficient mechanism to lower body temperature. With increasing temperature, the metabolic rate increases and the amount of oxygen consumed increases. Accordingly, respiratory rate increases and heart rate increases. Apart from this, people who show excessive physical activity may experience heat cramps. Apart from this, heat edema, sunburn, heat exhaustion can be seen in cases such as heat exhaustion. All of these conditions I have mentioned are the early effects of extreme temperatures. Some effects may also occur in the late period due to long-term exposure. Among these, cataracts, sun spots, premature aging and skin cancers, one of the conditions we do not want, may occur.''

Underlining that one should not go out between 10.00-16.00 unless necessary, Albayrak said, “We should stay at home as much as possible. We should not sunbathe or swim in the sea during these hours. Our citizens who will enter the sea should use sunscreen with at least 30 protection factors and wear sunglasses. People who will work under the sun need to take some protective measures. Among these precautions, they should prefer light, loose, light-colored clothes woven from tight fabric. Apart from this, one of the most important points is fluid consumption. At least 2, 2.5 liters of fluid should be consumed daily. First of all, our liquid preference should of course be water. Apart from this, milk, ayran, freshly squeezed fruit juices should be preferred instead of coffee, tea, carbonated drinks. In order to increase body resistance and provide the body with the necessary vitamins and minerals, plenty of vegetables and fruits should be consumed. Fatty foods should be avoided, boiling, cooking in its own juice or grilling methods should be preferred instead of frying. In addition, patients with diuretic use or fluid restriction such as chronic heart disease, chronic kidney disease, chronic liver disease should consult their own doctors when organizing their diets.
