Dr. Faculty Member Mehmet Soyarslan from Medipol University Hospital said that biceps injuries and shoulder dislocations in overhead sports should be taken seriously. Stating that serious damage can occur in the shoulder area due to sudden arm movement, Dr. Soyarslan said, “We surgically intervene in our patients who cannot recover with physical therapy. The full recovery process after surgery can take 3 to 6 months. In severe pain lasting more than 2-3 days, it is definitely useful to consult a specialist physician.”
Biceps injuries are frequently seen in athletes who are interested in overhead sports. Stating that the process should be followed seriously, Medipol Pendik University Hospital Orthopedics and Traumatology specialist Dr. Faculty Member Mehmet Soyarslan stated that injuries often heal with physical therapy. He said that in cases where physical therapy is insufficient, surgical procedure is performed.
Biceps tendon adhesion
Stating that various injuries are frequently experienced in the biceps region of athletes in overhead sports such as volleyball, handball and swimming, Dr. Soyarslan said, “There may be injuries specific to many athletes, especially in the shoulder area. One of the most common injuries we see is inflammation of the tendon we call biceps in the arm area due to strain. We mostly restore our patients to a healthy state with physical therapy. There is a cartilage structure in the shoulder joint where the biceps tendon adheres. There may be damage here due to sudden movement. If we detect a tear here in the examinations we do in our patients with persistent shoulder pain, the repair of this place may again be possible with physical therapy.”
Surgical method may be in question in chronic strain
Emphasizing that edema may occur in some tissues due to chronic strain in athletes, Dr. Soyarslan said, “We treat this with various injections. Surgical treatment may also be possible in stubborn cases. We have rotator muscles that allow us to lift our shoulder. In more advanced cases, tears are seen in the muscles that allow us to lift our shoulder. We treat these tears surgically,” he said.
Attention to shoulder dislocations
Stating that shoulder dislocations are also frequently seen in throwing sports such as volleyball and handball, Dr. Soyarslan said, “If these recur, cartilage damage may occur. We also treat these patients with surgery. After these surgeries, the patient may also need to undergo physical therapy for a while. The full recovery process can take 3 to 6 months.”
Referring to the fact that shoulder pain may occur while doing sports in daily life, Dr. Soyarslan said that it would be useful to consult a specialist physician in severe pain lasting more than 2-3 days.
