Experts: “Regular exercise is important for healthy aging”

Physiotherapist Hasan Basri Yaman stated that movement is important in protecting and improving both physical and mental health.

Emphasizing that regular physical activity is important for the prevention and treatment of diseases such as heart disease, stroke, diabetes, hypertension, obesity and dementia, Physiotherapist Hasan Basri Yaman said: “Although adequate physical activity varies according to each age and health condition, scientific studies have shown that even moderate physical activity 3-4 times a week, lasting 30-60 minutes, usually has positive effects on our health. It is important to gain exercise habits such as dancing, doing balance exercises, being active by playing moving games from an early age.”

“Finding time for exercise is as easy as it is difficult”

Reminding that it may be difficult to find time for exercise in the busy work life in adulthood, Yaman said, “Exercise becomes much more valuable, especially in jobs where you work sitting down (Especially wrist, elbow, neck, back and low back pain are very common in occupational groups who spend most of their working hours sitting in a chair, working in front of a computer). It is useful to take a walk after work or do desk exercises during working hours. We can also exercise during 15-minute breaks at home. If we are unable to set aside time for exercise, one option is to make sure that we do things in a way that gives us physical activity. For example, we can take walks around the house while talking on the cell phone.”

“Regular exercise and physical activity improves quality of life”

Physiotherapist Hasan Basri Yaman, who stated that the World Health Organization recommends at least half an hour of exercise every day, said in his article in the Public Health Bulletin of Erzurum Provincial Health Directorate, “We can get off one stop early while commuting to work. If we are going to the market or somewhere else, we can walk if it is a short distance, otherwise we can park our car away from the place we want to reach so that it is within walking distance. In buildings, we can prefer to use stairs instead of elevators when going back and forth between floors. When we go outdoors, we can do the exercise that suits us at that moment, such as cycling, walking or running. While walking, we can download a pedometer to our cell phone and calculate how many steps we take on average per day, or if we already have a pedometer on our phone, we can check it daily and set goals for ourselves. Regular exercise and physical activity are important for improving quality of life and healthier aging.”
