Clinical Psychologist Kübra Ekşi Yıldız from Medipol University Hospital said that aggression, lying, nail biting and hair pulling are symptoms of behavioral disorders in children. Referring to the golden rules of establishing a positive relationship with children with behavioral disorders, Yıldız said, “Mutual respect, spending quality time with the child, encouragement and expressing love are important.”
Stating that each child's growth process is unique and that stimuli from the environment affect the development of the child, Clinical Psychologist Kübra Ekşi Yıldız from Pendik Medipol University Hospital stated that as children get older, there may be changes in behaviors that occur with the stimuli from the environment and the development process. Stating that there are some criteria for a negative behavior seen in a child to be classified as a behavioral disorder, Yıldız said, “Aggression, lying, taking things without permission, speech disorders, finger sucking, nail biting, phobias and fears, introversion, sleep disorders, hair plucking and learning difficulties are some of the adaptation and behavioral disorders seen in children.”
Watch out for symptoms
Underlining that these symptoms alone do not indicate that the child is maladaptive and unbalanced, Clinical Psychologist Yıldız said, “The following behaviors are generally and frequently observed in children with maladaptive behavior; they are irritable, moody and disturbed, they can bully, they resist authority, they are in constant tension, their motivation is limited. It is possible to multiply these items.”
The process must be analyzed well
Emphasizing that the problems encountered in the developmental stages of children should be analyzed well, Yıldız said, “During these periods, the child may be exposed to the wrong attitudes of the adults around him/her and the parents. If he/she encounters obstacles while solving his/her problems, the solution of these problems, which are characterized as periodic, that is, ordinary, is postponed to new developmental periods and later ages of the child. In reaction to these, emotional disorders may be seen in the child and the usual problems grow.”
The golden rules of establishing a positive relationship with your child
Explaining the golden rules of establishing a positive relationship with children with behavioral disorders, Yıldız said: “Mutual respect, spending quality time with the child, encouragement and expressing love are important. Ignoring, withdrawing rewards, offering alternatives, verbally warning and avoiding arguments are effective methods for behavioral disorders. Yelling, silencing and hitting cause the bond of respect to break. The most important step is not to lose respect in this process. Discovering and revealing the positive points of the child and encouraging them reduces negative behaviors and makes the child self-confident. These children need to feel accepted and loved by their parents regardless of the circumstances.”
