“Fibroids are hormone-dependent tumors”

Acıbadem Ankara Hospital Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Dr. Sarp Özcan said, “Fibroids are hormone-dependent tumors. In other words, they are affected by estrogen and progesterone hormones. They occur in individuals with a genetic predisposition, so people with fibroids in their family are recommended to be more careful.”

Acıbadem Ankara Hospital Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Dr. Sarp Özcan gave important information about “fibroids”, which are defined as benign tumors arising from the muscle layer of the uterus, which are very common in women.

Pointing out that fibroids are found in 20 to 25 percent of the female population, Dr. Özcan explained that these formations cause complaints depending on their location and size.

“Fibroids are hormone-dependent tumors”

Stating that the causes of the formation of such tumors cannot be determined precisely, Dr. Özcan said, “Fibroids are hormone-dependent tumors. In other words, they are affected by estrogen and progesterone hormones. They occur in individuals with a genetic predisposition, so people with fibroids in their family are recommended to be more careful.”

Stating that fibroids sometimes do not give any symptoms at all, sometimes even revealed by an ultrasonography examination, Dr. Özcan said, “On the other hand, some patients apply to us with complaints such as very severe abdominal pain, abdominal swelling, palpable mass, menstrual irregularities, intermittent bleeding, severe bleeding, stomach and intestinal problems, constipation, difficult defecation.”

Özcan stated that imaging techniques such as ultrasonography, CT and MRI are used in the diagnosis process.

“These fibroids can be removed before pregnancy”

Pointing out that fibroids in the uterus prevent conception, Dr. Özcan said, “It is appropriate to visualize and remove these fibroids before pregnancy with ‘hysteroscopy’, that is, with a thin telescope placed into the uterus through the cervix. Sometimes intramuscular fibroids can also cause difficulty in conceiving. If a woman is pregnant with fibroids and a cesarean section is performed, fibroids can also be removed during delivery when the risk is low.”

Stating that the basis of fibroid treatment is surgical removal of fibroids and repair of the uterus by suturing, Dr. Özcan said that in recent years, since some fibroids have a risk of surgery radiologically, treatment with embolization system may be preferred in patients with diseases such as severe heart failure, but this procedure is more risky than surgery. Özcan stated that if there are too many fibroids or fibroids larger than 10 centimeters, open surgery is preferred; in other cases, closed method treatment is preferred.

Pointing out that the laparoscopy procedure called closed method has many advantages, Dr. Özcan said, “It provides many advantages for the patient. The patient's recovery period is short. Cosmetically, there are no scars on the abdomen, which we call postoperative scars. The amount of bleeding is less. This facilitates the healing process and shortens the patient's return to work. Postoperative pain is less,” he said.
