Eskişehir Fizyomer Terapia Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Medical Center, Physical Therapy and Rehabilitation Specialist Dr. Beyhan Yenerkol informed about fibromyalgia (Soft Tissue Rheumatism).
Stating that fibromyalgia is a chronic pain syndrome, Dr. Yenerkol mentioned that fibromyalgia is 10 times more common in women than in men. Dr. Yenerkol, who also conveyed the complaints of fibromyalgia patients, said, “I ache all over. One day I have pain in my arm, one day in my leg, one day in my neck. I cannot sleep, I wake up tired in the morning, I cannot find a place to put my legs at night. I go from doctor to doctor but they cannot find anything. They say your illness is nervous. I cannot convince anyone that I am sick.”
“The pain is felt at a high level”
Stating that these patients usually have a common personality structure, they are sensitive, sensitive, perfectionist people who scrutinize everything, Dr. Yenerkol said, “These patients want everything to be smooth, but they cannot find the energy to work. The pain has been present for more than 3 months. They use bags of medication, but the pain never goes away.”
Defining the most important problem in these patients as misunderstanding the pain, Dr. Yenerkol explained it as follows:
“For example, we fell and our knee hurt. This pain sensation is transmitted to the brain. Some substances secreted in the brain erase most of this pain sensation and transmit some of it to us. After a certain period of time, our pain passes. In fibromyalgia, it has been found that these substances are secreted less. Therefore, a small part of the pain is erased and a large part is transmitted. In other words, while a normal person hears the same pain at level 1, a fibromyalgia patient can hear it at level 3-5.”
“There are many undiagnosed fibromyalgia patients”
Pointing out that it is difficult to diagnose fibromyalgia patients, Dr. Yenerkol continued as follows;
“Because the tests are usually normal. Therefore, there are many undiagnosed fibromyalgia patients. The diagnosis is usually made by looking at the patient's history and some examination findings.” Speaking about the treatment of fibromyalgia, Dr. Beyhan Yenerkol said, “Treatment is done by using medical treatment, medical ozone applications and some physical therapy agents (superficial heater, andulation therapy, superficial and deep tissue massages, etc.) that change the perception of pain, aimed at the substances secreted in the brain.”
Dr. Yenerkol added that increasing contractions in fibromyalgia can lead to neck and waist flattening and hernias that occur over time by causing weakening in the muscles, and said, “This situation causes the pain to increase even more. In addition to fibromyalgia treatment, these diseases should also be treated.”
