Families need to teach children that the hand washing time should not be less than 20 seconds and that between the nails should be cleaned. Because hand hygiene has a very important place in the fight against the disease.”

With the opening of schools, there has been an increase in viral diseases. While viral diseases are more common especially in school-going children and their families, Prof. Dr. Aslı Aslan from the Department of Pediatrics at IUE Medical Point Hospital drew attention to the importance of good nutrition and sleep. Aslan said, “With the opening of schools, children started to enter crowded environments. It is inevitable that this situation will bring a burden of disease. Families need to protect the health of their children first. For this, good nutrition and good sleep are essential. Because good nutrition and sleep are the first rule of health.”

“Hand hygiene is very important in the fight against the disease”

Stating that families should explain the importance of hand hygiene to their children, Aslan said, “Children wash their hands in very short periods of time. Families also need to teach children that the hand washing time should not be less than 20 seconds and that it is necessary to clean between the nails. Because hand hygiene has a very important place in the fight against disease. Our children need to know that hand washing is not just touching soap and water. In addition, if we teach them that they should sneeze into their sleeves and cover their mouths and noses while sneezing, it will be useful in protecting our children against infections.”

Underlining that sick children should drink plenty of fluids, Prof. Dr. Aslı Aslan said, “One of the mistakes families make is to send the sick child to school. It should not be insisted on sending children with symptoms such as fever, infection and cough to school. In such cases, good nutrition and plenty of fluids will help the child to overcome the disease more easily.”
