Stating that many health problems can be encountered when not enough fluids are taken, Urology Specialist Dr. Münir Ali Bilgehan said, “Drink 2-3 liters of water a day, carry a water bottle with you. Drink herbal tea or mineral water instead of drinks containing caffeine.”
Acıbadem Eskişehir Hospital Urology Specialist Op. Dr. Münir Ali Bilgehan stated that maintaining the body's water balance, especially in hot weather in summer, plays a critical role for the proper functioning of the kidneys as well as the entire metabolism. Stating that the kidneys play a key role in cleansing the body of waste materials and maintaining the water-electrolyte balance, Dr. Bilgehan said, “The kidneys, each about the size of a fist, filter the blood and excrete waste products and excess fluid through urine. At the same time, they have vital functions such as regulating blood pressure, producing red blood cells and maintaining bone health. The kidneys regulate the pH level, maintaining the body's acid-base balance. They also maintain electrolyte balance and regulate the levels of minerals such as sodium, potassium and calcium. The balance of these minerals is critical for many vital processes such as nerve conduction, muscle function and heart rhythm. If the kidneys fail to function properly, it can lead to problems that can lead to kidney failure and then have serious consequences such as dialysis or kidney transplantation.”
“It can cause nausea, headache and cramps”
Stating that more water is lost in summer due to the increase in temperature and sweating and this is an important factor that increases the risk of kidney stone formation, Dr. Bilgehan said, “Insufficient water consumption can cause urine to condense and minerals to crystallize into kidney stones. It also negatively affects the process of cleansing the body of toxins. In addition, intense physical activities in hot weather can also increase water loss and strain kidney function. Insufficient fluid intake can lead to electrolyte imbalances such as 'hyponatremia', i.e. low sodium level, which can manifest itself with symptoms such as nausea, headache and muscle cramps and lead to serious cases.”
“Drink at least 2-3 liters of water a day”
Pointing out the importance of reducing alcohol and caffeine consumption in the summer months for kidney health, Dr. Bilgehan continued his speech as follows:
“These substances can increase the body's water loss due to their diuretic effects and increase the risk of dehydration. Therefore, it is necessary to drink plenty of water instead of alcohol and caffeine. Although our daily water needs vary depending on age, gender, physical activity level and environmental conditions, an adult should drink at least 2-3 liters of water a day. Adequate water intake enables the kidneys to effectively filter blood and remove waste products through urine. Water also helps to clean the urinary tract and reduce the risk of infection, dilute urine and prevent kidney stone formation.”
“Take water breaks at work”
Dr. Bilgehan also gave a few tips to encourage water consumption: “Keep a water bottle with you at all times so you don't forget to drink water. Keep track of your water consumption by using apps on your phone that remind you to drink water. Apart from water, consume healthy liquid alternatives such as natural mineral water, herbal teas and fresh fruit juices. Make drinking water a habit in your daily routine. For example, drink a glass of water every morning when you wake up and before going to bed at night. Drinking a glass of water before each meal not only increases water intake, but also gives a feeling of satiety and makes you eat less. I also recommend those working in an office environment to take water breaks at regular intervals and drink water. Adequate water intake helps the kidneys to function properly and prevents risks such as dehydration and kidney stone formation. Regular water consumption is necessary not only in the summer months but also in every period of the year.”
