Expert Clinical Psychologist Kerime Begüm Özkaya said that Generation Z now prefers texting instead of talking on the phone because it is practical.
Changing generations have added a new one to the innovations it brings with it. With the increase in digital communication, young people are reshaping the dynamics in their social relationships. In the research conducted for Generation Z, it was revealed that 1 out of every 4 young people prefer texting instead of talking on the phone. Stating that Generation Z feels very free, Kerime Begüm Özkaya, Specialist Clinical Psychologist at Sivas Medicana Hospital, said, “They act with the logic that I turn on the phone if I want, if I don't want, I don't. They find messaging applications, where fast and instant feedback is possible, more practical and avoid talking on the phone. In fact, I liken it to fast food consumption, because it is fast and practical, but they experience distraction with it.”
“I turn on the phone if I want, I don't turn it on if I don't want”
Emphasizing that the biggest feature of Generation Z is that they feel very free, Özkaya said, “There are generations known as X, Y and Z. We are always confronted with the Z generation's dependence on technology and the length of screen time. They have attention and focusing problems due to this. They are constantly exposed to technological devices in their hands. The biggest feature of Generation Z is that they feel very free. They act with the mentality of picking up the phone if I want to or not. They feel the need to feel very special, especially in the family environment. I am special, so they act with the logic that I can turn it on or not. Of course, another characteristic of Generation Z is being very practical. It is very difficult to talk on the phone for a long time, they prefer texting instead.”
“They want to text”
Stating that 1 out of every 4 young people prefer texting instead of talking on the phone, Özkaya said, “The period they are in and the need for practicality is the biggest factor in this, but this is a matter of preference because they prefer to be in contact with more than one person by texting and using voice notes instead of talking to one person on the phone. They avoid phone calls from their families with unexpected news or inquiries and prefer texting instead. All of these situations can be considered as young people's management of coping with emotional stress. Of course, in addition to this, the 35-54 age range is quite fond of talking on the phone.
