Erciyes University (ERU) Faculty of Medicine Hospitals Head of Department of Ophthalmology Prof. Dr. Fatih Horozoğlu made a statement on the occasion of “October 10 World Sight Day”; “Have an eye examination at least once a year,” he said.
Prof. Dr. Fatih Horozoğlu said that the theme of World Sight Day in 2024 is “Love Your Eyes” and the main focus is on children's vision and visual health. Horozoğlu made a statement on October 10, World Sight Day and said, “Sight is one of the most important features of a healthy person's perception of the outside world and is a function with psychological, mental and social components. Protection of good vision is one of the most important public health criteria in improving the quality of life from infancy to old age and in the development of a society consisting of healthy individuals. Children with visual impairment at an early age may have serious delays in motor and language development as well as emotional development.”
Prof. Dr. Horozoğlu said, “300 million people in the world face low vision, nearly 45 million people face blindness and over 500 million people face near vision problems. Many people have to continue their lives with disabilities due to low vision for many years. Uncorrected refractive errors, cataracts, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, corneal haze and trachoma are the most important causes of vision loss in the world.”
Prof. Dr. Fatih Horozoğlu mentioned the issues to be considered for the protection of eye health and said, “For good eye health, it is necessary to have a healthy life and healthy nutrition, to protect the eyes from screen light and sunlight, to use the necessary protective equipment against occupational accidents and to have timely and regular eye examinations. It is very important for individuals with no health problems to have an eye examination at least once a year to protect eye health. Love your eyes and take good care of them.”
