Pointing out that early intervention in gum diseases prevents tooth loss, Dr. Anıl Alnıak warned not to neglect gingivitis, which is the earliest stage of gum disease. Alnıak stated that gum diseases can cause many serious health problems from heart diseases to premature birth.
Stating that there are two most important factors in determining whether the gums are healthy or not, Dr. Faculty Member Anıl Alnıak from Istanbul Atlas University Dentistry Periodontology Department said, “These factors are gum color and whether there is bleeding in the gums. The color considered healthy for the gums is rose-dry, pale pink. Red, purple, black, blue and white gums are considered unhealthy.”
Noting that another symptom of gum diseases is bleeding gums that occur while brushing or spontaneously, Anıl Alnıak said, “Healthy gums do not bleed while brushing, flossing, eating and touching. If the gums are bleeding, it means that there is inflammation in the bleeding area,” she said.
Beware of red and swollen gums
Stating that unusual conditions in the gums should be well observed, Dr. Faculty Member Anıl Alnıak said, “Healthy gums have a tight appearance that is not swollen and ends like a knife edge on the surface of the tooth. If there is bleeding in the gums, red and swollen appearance, inflammatory discharge between the teeth and gums, gingival recession, teeth that are shaking and gradually moving away from each other and bad breath accompanying them, you should definitely be examined by a dentist.”
Plaque accumulation causes gingivitis
Noting that gingivitis is the most common gingivitis among gum diseases, the main reason for this is not brushing regularly, Dr. Faculty Member Anıl Alnıak said, “Gingivitis (gingivitis), periodontitis, gingival abscess, gingival enlargement and gingival recession can be seen among gum diseases. Gingivitis is the most common gingivitis among gum diseases. Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease and occurs as a result of bacterial plaque buildup on the teeth. The reason for plaque accumulation is that the teeth are not brushed regularly and the interfaces of the teeth are not fully cleaned.”
Bleeding when brushing teeth should be taken into account
Stating that bleeding is seen in the gums while brushing or flossing at this stage, Alnıak said, “Since the bone and support tissues holding the tooth are not yet affected, it can be fully cured when treated. When gingivitis, that is, gingivitis, is not treated, gingivitis progresses and periodontitis may occur,” she warned.
Stating that periodontitis is the stage in which the support bones and fibers holding the teeth are irreversibly damaged, Dr. Faculty Member Anıl Alnıak said, “Under the gum line; a pocket that holds food residues begins to form. After the treatment, the progression of damage can be prevented with proper oral and dental care. If periodontitis is not treated, as the destruction of the bone holding the tooth will continue, the teeth may shake and tooth loss may occur.”
Emphasizing that gum diseases are diseases that must be treated in order to protect oral and dental health, Dr. Faculty Member Anıl Alnıak said, “When gum disease, which can be seen at any age, is not treated; bleeding and discoloration of the gums, gingival recession, shaking of the teeth and tooth loss in the future may result in tooth loss.”
Gum health and general health affect each other
Underlining that the prevention and treatment of gum diseases is also important in the prevention of many systemic diseases and the control of existing systemic diseases, Dr. Faculty Member Anıl Alnıak concluded his words as follows:
“It is known that there is a relationship between untreated gum diseases and heart diseases, diabetes, rheumatic diseases, premature birth and low birth weight. Gum health and general health affect each other and improvement in both will improve the quality of life of the person.”
