Gynecologist warned about cancer: “Patients should not neglect their routine checks”
Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Dr. Mehmet Dolanbay drew attention to the fact that uterine cancer is the most common gynecological cancer and said, “Patients should not neglect their routine check-ups as the treatment gives more successful results in patients with early diagnosis.”
Stating that uterine cancer is the most common gynecological cancer, Acıbadem Kayseri Hospital Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Dr. Mehmet Dolanbay said, “Gynecological cancers are the most common cancers in women after breast cancer, lung cancer and colon cancer. Among these, we see uterine cancer most frequently.”
Pointing out that September is Gynecological Cancers Awareness Month, Dr. Dolanbay said that women's regular gynecological examinations every year are very important in the early diagnosis of these cancers and save lives.
“Uterine cancer is generally seen after menopause”
Stating that uterine cancer usually occurs in the postmenopausal age group, Dr. Dolanbay said, “If bleeding occurs again in patients who have stopped menstruating after menopause, this is a very important clinical situation for us. Women with bleeding should definitely consult a gynecologist. They should definitely have it checked to see if they have uterine cancer. Because patients who are diagnosed early have the opportunity to complete their treatment very comfortably.”
Stating that uterine cancer is not only in the menopausal age group, especially in overweight patients, Dr. Dolanbay said, “Because the unmet estrogen hormone is much more in these patients. Therefore, we can see uterine cancer in these patients. In the young age group, patients should apply to gynecologists in case of resistant intense bleeding and prolonged irregular bleeding so that they can be diagnosed with this disease.”
“Ovarian cancer has no obvious symptoms”
Pointing out that ovarian cancer is an insidious type of cancer, Dr. Dolanbay said, “We see ovarian cancer more frequently after uterine cancer. Ovarian cancer is a bit insidious. It cannot be diagnosed very easily. Because it does not have a very obvious symptom. There is no screening method. There are symptoms such as indigestion, bloating, abdominal pain and nausea after eating, which can occur in everyone. Therefore, these patients come to us a little late.”
Emphasizing that the most important point here is the routine examinations of the patients, Dr. Dolanbay said, “We usually do not go to the hospital without anything in our society. Since ovarian cancer does not give very serious symptoms, these patients can be diagnosed in advanced stages. For this reason, we recommend that women should definitely have routine examinations even if they have no problems. Because if we can identify this disease by making an early diagnosis, we can treat it very easily.”
“HPV is the most important cause of cervical cancer”
Stating that cervical cancer is a type of cancer with a clear cause, Dr. Dolanbay said that this type of cancer is caused by the virus called Human Papilloma Virus (HPV). Pointing out that its frequency is increasing day by day because it is common, Dr. Dolanbay underlined that when the HPV vaccine is administered, a 99 percent protection can be provided by activating the immune system.
Stating that cervical cancer rarely occurs without this virus, Dr. Dolanbay said, “There are actually screening programs all over the world and in our country. HPV and smear screening programs are carried out. We recommend that every woman have smear tests every year or HPV screening tests every 5 years. Here, if HPV is negative and our smear test is normal, we can screen the disease by looking again after 5 years. When we catch these diseases early, we are one step ahead of the disease. Therefore, patients should not disrupt their routine checks.”
