Stating that the way to protect against diseases that are expected to increase with the arrival of autumn and the opening of schools is to pay attention to hygiene and strengthen immunity, experts warned families and students.
Stating that children spend more time in closed and crowded environments with the opening of schools, Medicana Bursa Hospital Pediatrics Specialist Dr. Cansu Yılmaz said that hygiene and vaccination are very important. Stating that the likelihood of diseases increases with the opening of schools, Dr. Cansu Yılmaz explained the common diseases in children and ways of protection from these diseases. Drawing attention to the fact that children get sick more frequently in the fall season when cold weather is increasing, Yılmaz said, “Common diseases in children are acute respiratory infections, colds, flu, middle ear infections, external ear infections, sinusitis, pharyngitis, laryngitis, bronchitis, croup, pneumonia, rotavirus diarrhea, hand foot and mouth disease, urinary tract infections. The most common infectious diseases in schools are childhood diseases with rash, influenza, rarely meningitis, hepatitis A (jaundice) and parasitic infections. In order to prevent infections that we see frequently in school age, it is necessary to have all vaccinations, wash hands, eat adequate and regular nutrition, consume fluids, pay attention to sleep hours, wear seasonally appropriate clothes and do regular sports. Especially families and teachers should pay close attention to hygiene.”
“Do not send a sick child to school”
Stating that it is possible to protect against diseases such as measles, rubella, mumps, chicken pox, which are among the childhood diseases with rash, with vaccination, Yılmaz said, “Children with infectious childhood diseases with rash should not be sent to school. Colds and flu are most common during the school period and are characterized by cough, fever and weakness. The flu vaccine is given from the 6th month. Hepatitis A (jaundice) can be transmitted after ingestion of food contaminated with feces. It is possible to be protected by vaccination and washing the food.”
