Healthy eating and active life protect heart health

Stating that unhealthy nutrition is a serious factor in the emergence of cardiovascular diseases at a young age, Cardiology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erhan Tenekecioğlu drew attention to the importance of healthy nutrition and active life to prevent these diseases.

Cardiology Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Erhan Tenekecioğlu, who works at Bursa High Specialization Training and Research Hospital, made statements within the framework of World Heart Day. Stating that there has been a serious increase in cardiovascular diseases in recent years, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tenekecioğlu said, “The reason for this is the decrease in the movement of people due to the development of technology, serious deterioration in healthy nutrition, various other reasons and genetic factors.”

Underlining that the deterioration of the diet is an important factor in the emergence of cardiovascular diseases, Tenekecioğlu said, “The increase in the use of solid fats, the increase in processed food consumption and the widespread use of fastfood-style nutrition, especially among young people, is a serious factor in the emergence of cardiovascular diseases at younger ages. The fastfood habit, which has become widespread in our society, should be reduced. We also need to stay away from solid fats. It is important that we eat more white meat and vegetables. We especially need to give more weight to Mediterranean-type nutrition.”

Embrace an active life

Emphasizing that sedentary life slows down metabolism and causes fat accumulation in the body, Tenekecioğlu said, “We need to increase mobility in our daily lives. Sometimes it is useful to use stairs instead of elevators. In a study conducted in Sicily, they investigated how people live past the age of 100. Since the roads are uphill, people are constantly moving and this causes their metabolism to accelerate and good cholesterol to increase and vascular health to be better.”

Pointing out that stress is an important factor in heart health, Tenekecioğlu said, “It is impossible to avoid stress, but it is necessary to stay away from stressful environments as much as possible. It is useful to have a relaxing activity at home at a certain time of the day. This will be very useful not only for resting the head but also for regulating the general metabolism of the body.”
