After the first bell rang for the 2024-2025 academic year, the period of preparing lunchboxes for mothers started. Private Egekent Hospital Dietitian Cemile Gül gave important advice to mothers preparing lunchboxes for their school-going children. Dietitian Cemile Gül pointed out that childhood is a period of rapid growth-development and learning processes and therefore healthy nutrition is of great importance. “Healthy nutrition in children positively affects physical, emotional, social development and school success. At the same time, it is ensured that the correct eating habits that form the basis for adulthood are acquired.”
“Pay attention to protein balance”
Dietitian Cemile Gül, who gave information about the preparation of lunchboxes in preschool and school-age children, said, “Easy-to-carry foods should be preferred in the lunchboxes of preschool and school-age children. There should be foods containing daily protein, vegetables and fruits in the lunchboxes. And water should be added every day and drinking water should be monitored. Nutrition bags should be prepared by increasing the portions in proportion to their age.”
Options offered
Dietitian Cemile Gül, who explained the options that students should have in their lunchboxes if they are going to have breakfast or lunch in their classrooms, made the following recommendations:
“If breakfast is to be eaten at school, the first option is toast with whole grain bread and cheese, boiled egg, olives, tomatoes, cucumber, buttermilk. Fruit or nuts such as walnuts and almonds as a snack. Second option pancakes, cheese, boiled egg, peanut butter, banana, milk. Snack buttermilk, breadsticks. If lunch is at school, the first option is baked vegetable hash browns, pasta, yogurt. Fruit, nuts as a snack. Second option lentil meatballs, baked potato, greens, buttermilk. Snack can be milk, dried fruit. Since school hours are longer in the 12-18 age group, they should definitely not spend their meals as snacks. If they cannot eat from the cafeteria, they should make their meals adequate and balanced with dehydrated vegetable or legume dishes, yogurt, buttermilk and fruit. In case they come to school without food preparation, they can make their meals practical by taking meatballs, chicken on a plate instead of buying wraps from the canteen, with tomatoes, cucumbers and buttermilk.”
