Breast cancer can progress without showing symptoms in the early stages. Op. Dr. Mustafa Arısoy, one of the specialist surgeons of Çakmak Erdem Hospital, made important statements about the hidden threats of breast cancer and the life-saving role of early diagnosis.
Breast cancer is considered the most common type of cancer among women and its early diagnosis is critical for the success of the treatment process. Op. Dr. Mustafa Arısoy, one of the specialist surgeons of Çakmak Erdem Hospital, stated that breast cancer usually does not show obvious symptoms in the early stages. Stating that this situation makes it difficult to diagnose the disease early, Arısoy said:
“Breast cancer can progress insidiously and often does not form a distinct mass in the early stages. For this reason, patients often do not apply to health institutions before a significant symptom appears. This leads to more advanced stages of the disease and fewer treatment options.”
Hidden threats of breast cancer include genetic factors, hormonal changes and microcalcifications. Pointing out the importance of genetic predisposition, Op. Dr. Arısoy said, “Mutations in BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes significantly increase the risk of breast cancer. Individuals with a family history of breast cancer should be aware of genetic tests and regular screening programs.”
The life-saving role of early diagnosis
Emphasizing that the diagnosis of breast cancer in the early stages increases the success of treatment, Op. Dr. Arısoy explained the importance of early diagnosis methods as follows:
“Early diagnosis can help breast cancer to be treated in a less aggressive way and preserve the patient's quality of life. Screening methods such as mammography, ultrasonography and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) help detect the disease at an early stage. Regular mammography screening, especially from the age of 40, ensures that the disease is caught at an early stage and the treatment process is more successful.”
Pointing out that hormonal factors and lifestyle choices can also affect the risk of breast cancer, Op. Dr. Arısoy said, “Estrogen and progesterone hormones can play a role in the development of breast cancer. In addition, adopting a healthy lifestyle, avoiding smoking and excessive alcohol consumption can reduce risk factors.”
Early diagnosis of breast cancer plays a major role in minimizing the effects of the disease. Op. Dr. Mustafa Arısoy stated that women should not neglect regular health checks and participate in regular screening programs and said, “Early diagnosis both improves quality of life and increases survival rates. It is important for all women, especially those in the risk group, to have regular screening and controls.”
