Fırat University Hospital, Department of Internal Medicine, Division of Endocrinology Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kader Uğur made statements on the occasion of World Familial Cholesterol Day.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kader Uğur said, “The purpose of this day is that individuals with a family history of early heart disease and early death should be screened for cholesterol disease if their LDL cholesterol level is above 190. Because these may be hereditary cholesterol elevations inherited from the mother or father. Treatment is essential to reduce the risk of early heart disease and prevent other diseases that may develop. Cholesterol elevations, whether hereditary or individual, should be treated. It is important for patients to have regular check-ups to adjust the dose of the medications they use, to change the dose of medication when necessary and to control side effects, even if they are very rare. If blood cholesterol levels exceed 500 or 1000, it can lead to risks such as inflammation of the pancreas and cardiovascular disease, which can lead to death. Because of this risk, it is important to treat cholesterol. Lifestyle change, healthy eating, vegetable-rich foods, foods with plenty of fiber, increasing olive oil consumption, getting rid of excess weight and regular walking contribute to cholesterol treatment. In addition, lifestyle change, focusing on fish rather than red meat, using omega-3 fatty acids, avoiding smoking and alcohol are also of great importance in terms of treatment.”
