Higher risk of prostate cancer in people with a fatty and meat-heavy diet

Stating that prostate cancer, which used to be seen in the 80s, is now down to the 40s, Prof. Dr. Bülent Oktay said that men can learn whether they have prostate cancer by giving only a drop of blood.

Emphasizing that September is prostate cancer awareness month, Acıbadem Bursa Hospital Urology Specialist Prof. Dr. Bülent Oktay stated that prostate cancer was seen in the 80s in the past, but this age has now dropped to the 40s. Stating that men should be more conscious and careful about prostate cancer, Oktay said the following:

“The prostate is a deep structure. Doctors can only reach it through rectal examination. Therefore, it is not possible to understand by self-examination. However, the screening test called Prostate Specific Antigen (PSA) allows early detection of cancer. It is a simple test. Blood is taken from the patient and analyzed. In other words, you can find out if you have prostate cancer by giving a drop of blood. After the age of 40, I recommend patients to have a PSA test once a year so that they can be diagnosed early and the success of treatment increases with early diagnosis.”

Stating that prostate cancer is also related to genetic predisposition, Prof. Dr. Oktay said that if there is prostate cancer in the first-degree relatives in the family, these people should consult a urologist earlier and not neglect their follow-up. Referring to the importance of nutrition in prostate cancer, Prof. Dr. Bülent Oktay said, “Prostate cancer is partially related to nutrition. When we look at the lives of prostate cancer patients, we see that there are some common points. First of all, they smoke. They also like to eat excessively fried and burnt foods, which we call carbonized. They prefer high-fat and meat-based foods. However, this dietary style, like many diseases, increases the risk of prostate cancer.”

Stating that a vegetable-heavy diet protects against prostate cancer, Oktay said, “As in most cancer prevention methods, a balanced diet and vegetable-heavy consumption are required here. Of course, the body needs meat. We will eat meat especially for blood production and muscle strength. But not every day. Broccoli, especially broccoli, and pumpkin seeds should also be consumed to prevent prostate cancer. However, these should be consumed in small amounts for years. In other words, it is not very correct to cure for a month and try to be protected by eating pumpkin seeds and broccoli. Healthy eating should be a lifestyle,” he said.
