Hyssop, a source of healing, less is good, more is harmful

Hyssop fruit, which grows in nature, is beneficial for health with its antimicrobial properties and can cause problems when consumed in excess.

Many benefits of the fruit, which grows spontaneously in nature in Sivas and is popularly called “hyssop” or “ahlat fruit”, were determined as a result of the researches.

The studies conducted by Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ebru Yabaş, Director of Cumhuriyet University Advanced Technology Research Center, and her team determined that both the fruit part and the core of this fruit contain important health factors. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Yabaş stated that especially when the aqueous extracts of the fruit and seed parts were purified, their antimicrobial activities were examined and they obtained important results in these studies, “We recommend consuming this fruit in certain amounts. Because due to the active ingredients it contains, their harmful effects may also occur. Therefore, we quickly prioritized their dose studies.”

“A storehouse of healing”

Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ebru Yabaş stated that hyssop fruit is a storehouse of healing and said, “Especially in recent years, we have intensified our studies on species and endemic plants growing in Sivas with our team. In this study, especially in Sivas, it is a type of fruit, also known as hyssop pear or ahlat fruit among the people, suitable for growing in Sivas climate and growing spontaneously in nature. In our study, we worked on the aqueous extracts of both the fruit and the core of this fruit. We carried out the determination, purification and characterization of these active ingredients. Afterwards, we observed that these solutions have protective activities against infectious diseases in the fruit part. We observed that these are very active especially when consumed in certain doses. Again, when we looked at the aqueous solution of the core part, we observed that it also has an interesting healing effect against the side effects of these infectious diseases. In this state, we can actually call this fruit a healing fruit.”

“It should be consumed in moderation”

Yabaş stated that this fruit, which is a healing store, should be consumed in moderation and said, “The important thing here is to adjust the dose amount. Because depending on the active ingredients it contains, we can say that this fruit will play an active role when consumed in certain amounts and in certain doses. When we look at it in this context, we actually aim to reveal the healing effect of the aqueous phase we obtain from this fruit by developing a product as both nutrition and supplementary food. We recommend consuming this fruit in certain amounts. Because due to the active ingredients it contains, their harmful effects may also occur. Therefore, we have prioritized the dose studies. The active ingredients of the kernel of this fruit that pass into the water phase may cause side effects of infectious diseases. These side effects may include diarrhea in particular. We have observed that it also has a curative effect.”
