Incidence of chocolate cysts is increasing

Endometriosis (Endometriosis), which has recently been frequently detected in women, causes serious pain and infertility if left untreated.

Painful menstrual periods, chronic groin pain and infertility are known as the three most common symptoms of chocolate cysts. Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Prof. Dr. Volkan Noyan made statements to İhlas News Agency on the subject. Prof. Dr. Noyan pointed out that chocolate cysts are more common in women of reproductive age and said, “It is a disease of women between the ages of 18-45. This cyst is formed as a result of the intrauterine tissue settling in the ovaries. Bleeding starts in these cysts and this blood accumulates over time. These cysts are called chocolate cysts because they have the consistency of melted chocolate.”

“The incidence of cysts reaches up to 15 percent”

Pointing out that the incidence of chocolate cysts is increasing, Prof. Dr. Noyan said that we can easily detect chocolate cysts in the ovaries with pelvic ultrasonography, which is widely used, and these cysts can be seen up to 5-6 percent. The incidence of these cysts in women of reproductive age is up to 15 percent. The patient applies to us with complaints of pain and infertility. This pain is usually in the form of groin pain. Sometimes it can spread to the upper abdomen, waist and legs. We also interview patients who present with infertility and provide appropriate treatment.”

“Child factor is important”

Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Prof. Dr. Volkan Noyan explained that whether a child is desired or not is of great importance during the treatment and then said the following:

“In patients whose cyst size is not over 5-6 centimeters, we can first try to eliminate the discoveries of this cyst with a number of drugs. These treatments do not completely eliminate the cyst, but we eliminate the finding. Patients with cysts over five centimeters may require surgical intervention. In patients who want to become a mother, it may be more appropriate to start treatments for child desire before treating the cyst with medical or surgical methods.”
