Stating that radiofrequency applications have become widespread in recent years as an effective option in pain treatment, Algology (Pain Treatment) Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Tülin Arıcı said, “In this method, the transmission of pain sensation is prevented by producing certain currents and heat on tissues and nerves through special radiofrequency needles and cannulas connected to the radiofrequency device.”
Stating that the term radiofrequency (RF) is used for electromagnetic radiation between 3 kHz and 300 MHz wavelength, VM Medical Park Samsun Hospital Algology (Pain Treatment) Specialist Assoc. Dr. Tülin Arıcı said, “RF is used for treatment purposes as well as in radio broadcasting. Radiofrequency waves for therapeutic purposes are generally in the frequency range of 300-500 kHz.”
Radiofrequency wave effect
Stating that RF waves act by creating an electromagnetic field in the tissue, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arıcı said, “These waves cause back and forth movement, vibration and collisions in ions (sodium, potassium, chlorine, etc.) and polar molecules, causing the tissue to heat up. As a result of high heat, tissue destruction occurs and the transmission of pain sensation in nerve cells is suppressed.”
Conventional RF and Pulse RF
Stating that radiofrequency applications are applied in two ways, conventional RF and Pulse RF, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arıcı said, “With conventional RF, tissue damage is created with high heat. In Pulse RF, an electromagnetic field is created at low temperatures, high voltage and intermittent current, and changes are created at the cellular level. Pulse RF is thought to cause changes at the gene level in neurons.”
“The quality of life of patients is improved by preventing the transmission of pain sensation”
Stating that radiofrequency treatment is determined specifically for the patient according to the type of nerve, location and severity of the pain and is used for all chronic pain, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Arıcı said, “Radiofrequency applications stand out as an effective and reliable method in the treatment of chronic pain. With this method, the quality of life of patients is improved by preventing the transmission of pain sensation.”
