Stating that the first function of erythrocyte, known as 'red blood cell', in the body is gas exchange, Specialist. Prof. Dr. Önder Özüm Polat said, “Erythrocytes carry oxygen from the lung to the tissues and bring carbon dioxide from the tissue to the lung where it will be expelled. Low erythrocyte levels in the blood can lead to anemia.”
Liv Hospital Samsun Internal Medicine (Internal Medicine) Specialist Uzm. Dr. Önder Özüm Polat gave information about erythrocyte (RBC) elevation and low levels. Uzm. Dr. Polat said that low erythrocytes (red blood cells) in the blood can lead to anemia.
“First function is gas exchange”
Stating that the first function of erythrocyte, known as red blood cell, in the body is gas exchange, Uzm. Dr. Polat said, “Erythrocytes carry oxygen from the lung to the tissues and bring carbon dioxide from the tissue to the lung where it is excreted. Erythrocytes are nucleated cells containing a few organelles; most of their cytoplasm is composed of an iron-containing molecule called hemoglobin, which plays a role in oxygen transport.”
Stating that the presence of hemoglobin above the normal limit is called “erythrocytosis” or “polysystemia”, Uzm. Dr. Polat said, “Erythrocytosis is defined as an increase in the number of erythrocytes and hemoglobin per volume. An absolute increase in red cell mass is called polycythemia, also known as absolute erythrocytosis. Polycythemia also indicates an increase in erythrocyte production.”
“Polycythemia causes and risk factors”
Referring to the causes of polystemia, Uzm. Dr. Polat said, “Polystemia may develop as secondary in other diseases that cause hypoxemia (secondary polystemia), or it may occur with high amounts of erythropoietin secretion due to cancer or renal disease or as a completely autonomous neoplastic disease (polistemi vera). Polistemi vera, also known as polistemi, (rubra vera) is a disorder from the group of cryptic myeloproliferative diseases.”
“Nasal flesh and swollen bleeding are seen”
Pointing out that symptoms may occur due to circulatory disorders in the central nervous system, Specialist. Dr. Polat said, “Headache, dizziness, tinnitus, visual disturbances, tingling and numbness in the joints may occur. Gastrointestinal bleeding, nose, gum bleeding, cardiovascular symptoms (angina pectoris, heart failure), the most common symptom is itching.”
“Symptoms of anemia”
Stating that low erythrocyte, hemoglobin and hemetocrit values below the valid reference range are called “anemia”, Uzm. Dr. Polat said, “Hemoglobin value below 14 grams in adult men and 12 grams in adult women is defined as anemia. After the presence of anemia is shown, the cause must be clarified.”
“10 important diseases that cause low erythrocyte levels”
Uzm. Dr. Polat shared the causes of low erythrocyte levels as follows:
“Iron deficiency anemia, thalassemia, chronic disease anemia, sideroblostic anemia, ranel disease anemia, hypathyroidism, B12 and polyacid deficiency (megalablastic anemia), liver disease, some medications, cancer, HIV, bleeding.”
“Insidious symptoms of low erythrocyte levels”
Uzm. Dr. Polat mentioned the symptoms of low erythrocyte levels. Dr. Polat completed his statement as follows:
“Low red blood cells can be detected in symptoms such as irregular heartbeat, rapid fatigue, difficulty breathing, headache, dizziness, pale skin, cramps in the legs.”
