In society, men are late in the treatment of many health problems because they are afraid to seek solutions to their sexual problems. Op. Dr. Hüseyin Serhat Kerman from Medicana Health Group Urology Department said, “Since issues related to men's health are considered taboo in society, men cannot seek solutions to sexual health problems and are not sufficiently aware of many screening programs, especially cancer.”
Stating that male sexual health is a social issue that should not be ignored, Medicana Çeşme Urology Specialist Op. Dr. Hüseyin Serhat Kerman said that men cannot seek solutions to their sexual problems due to reasons such as 'shame and ridicule'. Kerman said, “For example, while breast prosthesis is considered normal in women, penis and testicular prostheses that correct deficiencies in men are not accepted and are considered shameful.”
Drawing attention to the helplessness of men in sexual matters, Kerman stated that men cannot be as comfortable as women in the problems they experience from infertility to impotence or the screening tests they should have at certain ages. Kerman said, “When couples cannot have children, they go to the gynecologist, and the gynecologist does the research on the male factor” and made the following evaluations: “In our country, which is considered a patriarchal society, men are far behind women in expressing their sexual health problems. For some reason, diseases and disorders related to men's sexual health are ignored. In addition, society fuels this wound with impulses such as shame and non-acceptance. In our society, male diseases and sexual deficiencies are made the subject of jokes and men become their own doctors, which leads to the progression of diseases and unconscious use of drugs. For example, breast prostheses, which are both made of silicone and used only for visual purposes in women, are considered normal, while penis and testicular prostheses, which correct deficiencies in men, are condemned by society. From another perspective, although the inability of couples to have children can be related to the man as well as the woman, the male factor is usually discarded and the woman is examined. Even if the woman does not have a problem, the investigation of the male factor is carried out by gynecology specialists, and infertility treatment is often started without investigating important diseases that may belong to the man.”
Men are also not aware of cancer
On the other hand, Opr. Dr. Kerman noted that screening tests are important especially in the early diagnosis of cancer, but the practices in this regard are in favor of women. Prof. Dr. Kerman said, “While annual cancer screening tests are carried out with serious protocols in women, men are ignored. Most men are unaware of the risk of prostate cancer after the age of 40 and that it reaches high rates in the following years. As a result, in terms of public health, men in Turkey should be informed about the unknown and unrecognized diseases that await them.
