Stating that menstrual delay drugs are usually hormone-containing tablets, Dr. Erdoğdu said, “These drugs help delay the onset of menstruation by controlling the release of hormones that regulate the menstrual cycle. Among the most commonly used drugs are progesterone derivatives. Menstruation may need to be delayed at special times such as vacations, weddings or due to health problems such as excessive bleeding, painful menstruation. In these cases, menstrual delay medications are used.”
“Doctor control is essential in the use of menstrual delay medications”
Emphasizing that menstrual delay medications must be recommended by a specialist physician and used under control, Opr. Dr. Erdoğdu said, “Medications should be started a certain period of time before menstruation starts. This period may vary according to the type of drug. In addition, the dosage and duration of use should also be determined by the doctor. Generally, the use of drugs can be between 10 days and 2 weeks.”
“Rarely, serious side effects such as blood clots may occur”
Stating that the side effects of menstrual delay medications should also be taken into consideration, Opr. Dr. Erdoğdu said, “Although temporary side effects such as headache, nausea and breast tenderness are common, serious side effects such as the risk of blood clots can rarely occur. In particular, people with impaired hormonal balance, those with kidney or liver problems and those at high risk of blood clots should not use menstrual delaying medications.”

Pointing out the importance of using the drug regularly and as recommended by the doctor, Opr. Dr. Erdoğdu said, “It should not be forgotten that the menstrual cycle will continue regularly after the use of medication. A health specialist should be consulted to get more information about menstrual delay medications and to make a detailed evaluation of their use. Since everyone's body structure and health status are different, a personalized approach is important.”
