
More than 40 thousand people are diagnosed with lung cancer annually, which is the most common cause of death in Turkey. Chest Diseases Specialist Prof. Dr. Servet Kayhan said, “Lung cancer is the most common type of cancer leading to death. More than 40 thousand people in our country and about 2 million people in the world are diagnosed with lung cancer every year.”
Private Amasya Kolmed Hospital Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Servet Kayhan, who made statements on the occasion of “Lung Cancer Awareness Month”, said, “Respiratory complaints such as colds and flu increase in winter months. The diagnosis of an unrecognized cancer may appear by chance in X-rays and tomography,” he said.
Those with a family history of cancer and smokers beware
Emphasizing that the risk of lung cancer increases in people with a family history of cancer, people over the age of 50 and smokers who have been smoking for more than 20 years, Prof. Dr. Kayhan said, “Patients with symptoms such as chest pain, shortness of breath, cough, hoarseness or blood in sputum usually present as advanced lung cancer. For this reason, we especially recommend lung imaging and screening tests for people in the risk group. Because diagnosing cancer at an early stage is very important for life-saving treatment.”
