Neurosurgeon Op. Dr. Koparan: “Hydrocephalus can cause death if not diagnosed early

Stating that hydrocephalus disease should not be taken lightly, Elazığ Medilines Hospital Neurosurgeon and Diseases Specialist Op. Dr. Mehmet Koparan said, “If it is not diagnosed in the early period, it causes very serious problems that can cause sudden death. This disease causes a very serious headache, nausea, vomiting and unstable walking in adults.”

Brain Surgeon and Diseases Specialist Op. Dr. Mehmet Koparan, who works at Elazığ Medilines Hospital, made explanations about 'Hydrocephalus' disease. Stating that hydrocephalus disease is a very fatal disease when not diagnosed on time, Neurosurgeon Op. Dr. Mehmet Koparan said, “The brain is a structure that needs water and produces it in order to meet its own necessary needs, allowing it to fall far below its dry weight and to keep its surface wet. There is a total of 500 cc of cerebrospinal water production in 3 cycles daily. This produced liquid has a cycle that flows from the structures we call water sacs ventricles through their own holes towards the spinal cord and circulates within the spinal cord. When these passage routes and holes are blocked for any reason, the passage of water from the ventricle to the other ventricle is blocked and water accumulation starts in front of the blockage. The high protein structure in the nutrients that can be an obstacle in water passage or the obstruction of the channel for any reason structurally or in a patient who has had an accident, the blood that emerges after a while as it passes through the holes there can cause obstruction as long as it passes through the filter and as a result, clinical findings begin to appear in the patient. If this patient is a newborn baby and the bone structures in the head, called fontanelle, are not fully developed, the brain stretches. As water accumulates, the head will start to grow. As the head starts to grow, the eyelids will be pulled upwards and a picture we call the setting sun view will appear. As the intracranial brain increases, the baby will have vomiting and loss of appetite. When such conditions are seen, hydrocephalus has developed. In some cases, the brain overcomes those holes with high pressure on the way to this hydrocephalus picture and overcomes the clinic by itself. We call this picture ares hydrocephalus. Since this is not the case in adults, when water accumulates in the brain, the picture is much noisier than in children. If it is not diagnosed at an early stage, it can cause very serious problems that can lead to sudden death. In adults, this disease causes a very serious headache, nausea, vomiting and unstable walking. When hydrocephalus is diagnosed, the first thing to do is to create a corridor for the passage of water. If a membrane-shaped structure has formed in the passage, the membrane needs to be opened with the help of a tool called an endoscope. If this method is not possible, a system called a shunt should be placed in the brain and the water should be drained by passing one end of the shunt through the neck to the brain and the other end to the abdomen. Hydrocephalus is extremely important. Early diagnosis and treatment is life-saving. Headache should not be dismissed as a headache,” he said.
