New hope in diabetes treatment and weight management

A new class of diabetes drugs effective in blood sugar management and weight control attracts attention. Istanbul Aydın University Faculty of Pharmacy, Department of Pharmaceutical Toxicology Lecturer Dr. Lecturer. Prof. Dr. Sonia Sanajou made important statements about this new drug known as Mounjaro and produced with the active ingredient Tirzepatide.

Stating that the drug differs from traditional treatments due to its double agonist feature in the treatment of diabetes, Dr. Lecturer. Prof. Dr. Sonia Sanajou said, “Mounjaro, which activates both glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP) and glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) receptors, contributes to weight loss by reducing appetite as well as blood sugar regulation. Although the drug is not officially approved for weight loss, its effect on weight reduction is of great interest. Clinical studies have shown that even individuals without diabetes experience significant weight loss when using this drug. This has led to its off-label use for weight management and has led to it being seen as a 'wonder' solution.”

“The most common side effects include nausea and abdominal pain”

Stating that clinical trials have shown that Mounjaro provides a significant improvement in blood glucose control, Dr. Sonia Sanajou said that the FDA-approved drug's weekly injection doses increase the potential for blood glucose reduction and weight loss during the treatment process, however, considering serious health risks such as medullary thyroid carcinoma or pancreatitis, she recommended that patients should seek medical advice before use. “The most common side effects include nausea, decreased appetite and abdominal pain, and it is important to monitor these side effects. Mounjaro also delays gastric emptying, which may affect the absorption of some oral medicines.”

“The drug is subject to additional monitoring with an inverted black triangle in Turkey”

Stating that the obesity rate worldwide is increasing at an alarming rate and millions of people have difficulty managing weight-related health problems, Dr. Sonia Sanajou said, “This ongoing problem has increased the demand for fast and effective weight loss solutions and Mounjaro has emerged as a promising option. Print and visual media, social media, celebrity endorsement and the perception of a more practical alternative to traditional weight management approaches have further increased the popularity of Mounjaro. However, this trend raises ethical and safety concerns regarding the use of the drug for weight loss alone, especially in patients without diabetes. Mounjaro, which is also available as a licensed medicinal product for human use in Turkey, is subject to additional monitoring with an inverted black triangle for safety reasons.”

“The drug should be seen as part of a comprehensive plan to combat weight”

Stating that effective weight loss requires a holistic approach that includes regular exercise, a healthy diet and the use of medication under the guidance of a physician, Dr. Sonia Sanajou said, “Relying solely on medications can lead to temporary or incomplete results and may not address key lifestyle factors that contribute to weight gain. Therefore, while Mounjaro offers a new option for those struggling with weight management, it should be seen as part of a comprehensive plan and not as a stand-alone solution. Appropriate medical guidance, awareness of the risks, and a commitment to a balanced diet and exercise are essential elements that should go hand in hand with the use of such medications.”

Dr. Sanajou concluded, “Mounjaro offers an exciting development in the management of both diabetes and weight loss. However, its use for these purposes should be part of a broader, balanced approach that prioritizes safety, incorporates lifestyle changes and prioritizes expert guidance. As with any medication, responsible use, which constitutes rational medication use, is a key factor for long-term success.”
