Prof. Dr. Özkaya said, “Smoking, which the World Health Organization refers to as the world's fastest spreading and longest lasting epidemic, has become the most legal deadly substance all over the world and in our country. In recent years, while the smoking habit has been decreasing in developed countries, its consumption in developing countries has been increasing every year. Nicotine addiction can develop frequently due to social, economic and sociocultural factors and it is estimated that the age of starting smoking in Turkey has dropped to 10-11 years. Today, we know that Turkey remains at the top of the world in cigarette consumption. According to the researches, Turkey ranks first in the world with 17.1 cigarettes per capita per day. This figure is 15.7 in Greece, 15.5 in Israel, 15.5 in Japan and 15.4 in Austria.”
