Non-surgical solution to movement disorders with Smart Beyond Sound treatment

NeuroLab Istanbul 2024 started at Medipol Acıbadem Regional Hospital. Prof. Dr. Alfonso Fasano from the Department of Neurology at the University of Toronto and Prof. Dr. Andres Lozano, former head of the Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Toronto, participated in the program, where technologies such as Brain Battery (DBS) and Smart Beyond Sound (MRgFUS), which stand out in the treatment of various diseases, especially Parkinson's disease, were examined.

NeuroLab Istanbul 2024, where world-renowned neurologists and neurosurgeons discussed movement disorders and new generation brain treatment methods, will take place at Medipol Acıbadem Regional Hospital on November 13-14. Speaking at the opening of the program, Prof. Dr. Alfonso Fasano said, “The technology related to Parkinson's treatment is advancing extremely. I am proud of the Medipol team,” while Prof. Dr. Andres Lozano said, ”I am very happy to be in Istanbul. We can perform non-surgical treatment for our Parkinson's patients with the transonic method. They came here for training not only from Turkey but also from all over the world.”

“We want Istanbul to be recognized and become a meeting point in this field”

Providing information about the program, Medipol University Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center Neurosurgery Specialist Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Zırh said, “Our goal is to be a meeting point for doctors from the surrounding countries who are interested in learning about movement disorders, who are devoted to it and who strive to be more useful to these patients, and neurosurgeons who are interested in these procedures. We want Istanbul to be recognized in this field and become a kind of meeting point.”

“With Smart Beyond Voice (MRGFUS), the patient does not need to be hospitalized”

“Patients for whom medical treatment is not enough or who cannot live their daily lives healthily due to the side effects of the medication need other treatment methods,” said Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Zırh and added, ”The most prominent treatment among these is brain pacemaker treatment. With two electrodes, an extension cable and a device that we place inside the brain, we can send an electric current into the brain and change the electrical activity of the cells there. This allows us to correct the disease symptom and turn back the clock of the disease. This gives us the opportunity to provide goodness to our patients in an ever-improving quality with the technology that has been developing for many years.”

Providing information about Smart Beyond Sound technology, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ali Zırh said, “With the help of non-surgical MR, we prevent tremors by reaching certain points with sound waves. Parkinson's disease is a chronic and progressive disease. When we intervene in patients, we prevent tremors or strengthen their ability to move. We make it possible for them to come back to their healthy days. Our patient does not need to be hospitalized. Thanks to a few hours of procedure, our patient can go home. We have patients applying for this process and patients waiting for the operation. We applied this method to our 18th patient yesterday.”

He performed more than 1,400 brain pacemaker surgeries

The Parkinson's Disease and Movement Disorders Center (PARMER), which was established at Medipol University in 2018 and received the title of “Center of Excellence and Training” in 2019, draws attention as Turkey's first independent institution focusing on the treatment of movement disorders. The center, which offers advanced treatment options for Parkinson's and similar diseases, has performed more than 1,400 brain pacemaker surgeries as an experienced institution in the region. In addition to brain pacemaker treatment, it continues to offer hope to its patients with the most up-to-date methods such as smart Beyond Sound (MRgFUS).
