Normal birth strengthens the bond between mother and baby

Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Op. Dr. Sevgi Şenol, who stated that the oxytocin hormone secreted by the mother during normal birth facilitates uterine contractions and accelerates birth, also pointed out that it provides a much stronger bond between mother and baby.

Gynecology and Obstetrics Specialist Op. Dr. Sevgi Şenol, who works at Bursa City Hospital, made statements about the effects of normal birth on mother, baby and public health within the scope of “Normal Birth Week”. Stating that normal birth is the type of birth in which the baby is born vaginally after completing the process in the mother's womb, Op. Dr. Şenol said, “It usually takes place in the natural process without the need for intervention, starting with uterine contractions after the completion of the 37th week of pregnancy.”

Underlining that normal birth, which is the first choice in the absence of a medical indication, offers many advantages for the mother's body, Şenol said, “Compared to cesarean delivery, the mother who gives birth normally; can stand up immediately after birth, return to her daily life, breastfeed her baby immediately after birth, since there is no surgery, and skin-to-skin contact can be provided immediately. Therefore, the hormones secreted from the mother during normal delivery ensure that the mother's birth is more comfortable.”

Strengthening the baby's immunity

Emphasizing that the hormone oxytocin, also known as the “love hormone” among the people, is secreted during normal birth, Şenol said, “This hormone accelerates birth by facilitating uterine contractions. At the same time, it provides a much stronger bond between mother and baby. In addition, the baby, who passes through the vaginal canal during normal delivery, expels the amniotic fluid in the lungs more effectively as it passes through the birth canal. In this way, the baby's respiratory system is positively affected after birth. As the baby passes through the birth canal, it encounters the mother's vaginal flora and contact with the vaginal flora strengthens the baby's immunity. However, the microbiome, which we call beneficial bacteria in the baby's body, is enriched and our baby becomes a healthier individual in later years.”

Mothers' self-confidence increases

Stating that medical resources are consumed less in normal delivery and that the mother recovers as soon as possible and joins community life, Şenol continued his words as follows:

“During normal labor, the mother actively participates in labor and takes an active role in the birth. This leads to an increase in the mother's self-confidence. The mother develops a more positive state of consciousness and feels better after the birth. Many women agree that the experience of normal birth empowers them and they experience more positive feelings about the postpartum motherhood process.”

Op. Dr. Sevgi Şenol concluded, “The mode of delivery is always determined by health professionals within medical indications. Our priority is the health of both mother and baby. Normal birth is a completely natural process. It has many benefits for the mother, baby and society.”
