Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Rabia Kanbak, one of the doctors of Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic of Izmir Çiğli Training and Research Hospital, stated that the immune system of babies born with normal birth is also strong and the risk of developing diseases in the coming years is less.
It is stated that during normal delivery, the baby encounters a number of bacteria while moving through the birth canal and these bacteria are very effective in strengthening the baby's immune system.
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Ayşe Rabia Kanbak, one of the doctors of Gynecology and Obstetrics Clinic of Çiğli Training and Research Hospital, drew attention to the benefits and processes of normal birth within the scope of October 1-7 Normal Birth Week. Assoc. Dr. Kanbak said, “Normal birth is the natural birth of the baby after the mother's spontaneous contractions,” and stated that this birth method offers many advantages for both mother and baby.
Benefits of normal birth
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kanbak stated that normal birth allows the mother to recover quickly and offers the opportunity to have early contact with her baby. “While the recovery process after cesarean section takes longer, mothers who give birth normally regain their former health in a short time and start breastfeeding their babies immediately,” she said. Kanbak also emphasized that the oxytocin hormone secreted during normal delivery strengthens the bond between mother and baby and facilitates the breastfeeding process.
Advantages of normal birth for the baby
Referring to the positive effects of normal birth on the baby's health, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kanbak said, “As the baby passes through the birth canal, it encounters beneficial bacteria for the immune system. This contributes to strengthening the baby's immune system.” Stating that normal birth is also beneficial for the development of the baby's respiratory system, Kanbak said, “As the amniotic fluid in the lungs is more easily expelled while passing through the birth canal, the risk of respiratory distress is also reduced.”
How does the normal birth process take place?
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kanbak stated that birth is a natural process and usually starts between 37-42 weeks of pregnancy. “Birth starts with contractions in the uterus and continues with the opening of the cervix. The process is completed when the baby passes through the birth canal.” Stating that the mother's contractions are alleviated after birth, Kanbak explained that birth is a 3-stage process, the cervix opens in the first stage, the baby is born in the second stage, and the placenta is expelled in the third stage.
Can birth pains be managed?
Stating that birth pains are manageable, Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kanbak said, “Labor pains may be a pain that the mother has not experienced before. However, today, this process can become more painless with methods such as anesthesia applied from the waist in many centers.” She also emphasized that the pregnancy trainings given in hospitals raise awareness of expectant mothers and facilitate the birth process.
How long is the hospital stay in normal delivery?
Assoc. Prof. Dr. Kanbak said that mothers who give birth normally usually stay in the hospital for 24 hours. “After birth, the mother is allowed to stand up, eat and take a shower in a short time. In this process, the health status of the mother and the baby is closely monitored.”
