Obesity surgery in adolescence

In Düzce University Faculty of Medicine Hospital, 4 people with obesity, an important health problem that has emerged in adolescence due to the decrease in physical activity in recent years, were treated.

Stating that Obesity Surgery is life-saving for patients who cannot achieve weight loss with traditional weight loss methods in adolescents as well as in adults, Prof. Dr. Mevlüt Pehlivan, Head of the Department of General Surgery at Düzce University Faculty of Medicine Hospital, operated on four obesity patients between the ages of 16-19 on the same day. Stating that the operations were successful, Prof. Dr. Pehlivan reported that the patients were in good health.

Prof. Dr. Pehlivan stated that they evaluate the weight loss and analyzes of the patients at regular intervals after the operation and that they aim for the patients to achieve their ideal weight and step into a healthy life. Emphasizing the importance of teamwork in bariatric surgery performed in adolescence and childhood, Prof. Dr. Pehlivan said, “Our adolescent surgeries continue routinely. In our clinic, we operated on three adolescent patients on the same day. One of these patients underwent surgery together with his older sister. I have been in this business for years. I am one of the first in this field. Of course, it is an operation within a team work. In the background, our professors from the Department of Pediatric Mental Health and Diseases, the Department of Anesthesia and the Department of Pediatric Endocrinology made great efforts in the preparation of this operation. Ensuring this whole contributes to success. Our team will continue to follow up before and after the operation.”

Patients who underwent surgery and their families also stated that they chose Düzce University Faculty of Medicine Hospital after much research, which was a difficult decision. Patients who stated that they could not get results with diet and exercise stated that they were deemed suitable for surgery after a series of evaluations.
