'Oncoplastic' advantage in breast cancer

Op. Dr. Tolgahan Alpaydın from the Plastic Surgery department of IUE Medical Point Hospital said that it is possible to prevent breast loss in patients diagnosed with breast cancer with 'oncoplastic breast surgery'. Alpaydın said, “Patients can usually return to their normal activities within a few weeks. The patient is both physically and psychologically happy.”

In patients diagnosed with breast cancer and operated on, oncoplastic breast surgery can prevent breast loss. Op. Dr. Tolgahan Alpaydın from IUE Medical Point Hospital Plastic Surgery Department also gave important information about 'oncoplastic breast surgery'. Alpaydın said, “Oncoplastic breast surgery is a surgical technique used in the treatment of breast cancer. This method combines surgical removal of breast cancer and aesthetic reshaping of the breast. With oncoplastic breast surgery, we aim to both treat the cancer and restore the cosmetic appearance of the breast, symmetry and even improve it. We apply oncoplastic breast surgery to patients who are diagnosed with breast cancer or who are in the risky group with gene tests. Oncoplastic breast surgery is especially suitable for patients with large tumors or multiple tumors in the breast, but who want breast conserving surgery instead of mastectomy.”

'Two-stage surgery'

Emphasizing that the surgery takes place in two stages, Alpaydın said, “We perform joint surgery with the general surgery team. The general surgery team removes the breast cancer tissue together with the surrounding healthy tissue. At the same time, we aesthetically correct the cavity formed after the removed tissue. This can be done by reshaping the remaining part of the breast, reconstruction in order to provide symmetry to the other breast, and when necessary, new generation silicone implants can be made by creating a hybrid pocket.”

'Expert team is important'

Referring to the advantages of oncoplastic breast surgery, Alpaydın said, “The time for patients to return to their social lives varies depending on the extent of the surgery and the patient's recovery rate. However, we usually discharge patients a few days after surgery. They can usually return to their normal activities within a few weeks. While minimizing the deformity of the breast makes the patient physically happy, it provides an important advantage in terms of psychological well-being. As a result of the operation, our patients can continue with additional radiotherapy and chemotherapy if necessary. There is no obstacle for treatment.” Alpaydın underlined that surgeries should be performed by a trained and motivated team of experts.
