Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. İlke Karagöz emphasized that obesity is one of the biggest health problems of modern societies and said, “Postbariatric surgical interventions are not only limited to aesthetic concerns; it is also aimed at eliminating hygienic problems and physical ailments.”
Medical Park Adana Hospital Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. İlke Karagöz made explanations about body contouring surgeries.
Emphasizing that obesity is one of the biggest health problems of modern societies and many individuals choose to deal with this problem through bariatric surgery, Plastic, Reconstructive and Aesthetic Surgery Specialist Op. Dr. İlke Karagöz said, “Bariatric surgery improves the general health status of individuals by providing significant weight loss. However, this rapid and excessive weight loss can lead to aesthetic and functional problems such as sagging skin and deformation in body contour. This is where postbariatric surgery comes into play. Postbariatric surgery covers a series of surgical procedures aimed at correcting these aesthetic and physical deformities that occur after weight loss and aims to improve both the physical and psychological health of patients.”
“Eliminates hygienic problems”
Stating that post-bariatric surgery may be suitable for patients with a significant decrease in body weight and consequent severe sagging of the skin and soft tissues, Op. Dr. İlke Karagöz said, “These surgical interventions are not only limited to aesthetic concerns, but are also aimed at eliminating hygienic problems and physical discomfort. For example, skin sagging and excess tissue can cause skin infections, irritation and difficulties in daily activities.”
Speaking about which procedures plastic surgery specialists perform after obesity surgery, Op. Dr. Karagöz listed them as follows:
“Abdominoplasty: It is the process of removing excess skin and fat tissue in the abdominal area after bariatric surgery. This procedure also includes tightening the muscles, especially in cases where the abdominal muscles are weak. It is one of the most common procedures after bariatric surgery. The waist area is also shaped during this procedure.
Breast aesthetics: These are surgical procedures performed to correct sagging, volume loss and asymmetry that occur in breast tissue after weight loss. Breast lift, breast augmentation and reduction procedures can be considered within this scope.
Various procedures such as arm lift, thigh lift, removal of sagging skin and tissue in the back and hip areas are performed to correct body contour. It is usually planned as a multi-stage process and is applied taking into account the general health status of the patient.
Face and neck lift: These are aesthetic surgical interventions performed to correct sagging in the face and neck areas after weight loss.”
“The healing process has a direct impact on the success of the surgery and the general health of the patient”
Pointing out that the healing process of patients who have undergone postbariatric surgery is a critical period that has a direct impact on the success of the surgery and the general health of the patient, Op. Dr. Karagöz listed the important issues to be considered in this process as follows;
“Care of the suture line: Keeping the sutured area clean with antiseptic solutions recommended by the physician reduces the risk of infection.
Physician controls: Going to your physician regularly after surgery; It is important to see that the healing process is progressing healthily, to see if any complications have developed and to intervene early in case of complications.
Nutrition and fluid consumption: A balanced diet high in protein, vitamins and minerals is essential for the body to heal. Protein plays an important role in tissue repair and accelerates the healing process.
Drinking enough water: It helps the body to heal. Particular attention should be paid to adequate fluid intake in the post-surgical period.
Physical activity: Immediately after surgery, heavy exercises should be avoided and light physical activities should be started gradually. Light exercises such as walking increase blood circulation and support the healing process. Heavy lifting and sudden movements should be avoided for the first few weeks. This helps prevent sutures from opening and complications in wound healing.
Wound healing and skin care: Tight clothing should be avoided to allow the surgical site to heal comfortably. Cotton and loose-fitting clothes that do not irritate the skin should be preferred. The skin around the surgical site should be moisturized with appropriate products to prevent skin dryness.
Psychological support: Postoperative body changes and changes in lifestyle may affect the patient's psychological state. Psychological support plays an important role in the healing process.
Recognize signs of complications: Look out for signs of infection such as high fever, redness, swelling, pain or discharge from the surgical site. If these symptoms occur, consult a doctor.
Management of scars:
1-Scar care: There will be products we recommend to reduce the appearance of scars. Also, avoiding sunlight and protecting the scars can prevent them from becoming prominent.
2-Massage and silicone patches: Massage and silicone patches can be used to reduce the appearance of scars after wound healing is complete.
Smoking: Smoking is a factor that negatively affects wound healing and increases the risk of complications. Therefore, it is very important not to smoke before and after surgery.
Adequate rest: The body needs adequate rest during the healing process. Especially in the first weeks, attention should be paid to sleep patterns and adequate sleep should be obtained.
Sleep position: In the first period, appropriate sleeping positions should be preferred according to the surgical procedure.
Healthy lifestyle: Postbariatric surgery usually requires patients to make permanent changes in their lives. Healthy eating habits and regular exercise should be maintained during this period.
Emotional and social support: The emotional and social support you will receive from your close environment during this period positively affects the healing process.”
