Oral and Dental Diseases Dt. Ulaş Can Oğuz emphasized the importance of tooth whitening and said, “Excessive antibiotic use causes tooth discoloration.”
Pointing out that there are various reasons why tooth color differs according to individuals, BHT CLINIC Istanbul Tema Hospital Oral and Dental Diseases Dt. Ulaş Can Oğuz said, “Coloration can be internal or external. These; physiological discoloration, discoloration after amalgam filling, discoloration due to antibiotic use during pregnancy and infancy, internal discoloration of the tooth due to root canal treatment, discoloration due to frequent consumption of coffee, tea, smoking, and discoloration caused by the loss of vitality of the living tissue in the tooth as a result of trauma.”
“Teeth whitening is the removal of colored organic and inorganic substances formed in the porous enamel and dentin structure on the surface of the teeth with tooth whitening gels such as carbamide peroxide,” said Dt. Oğuz stated that this process is done to remove the coloration on the tooth enamel and that the teeth whitening process will be applied by the dentist.
Types of teeth whitening
Dt. Ulaş Can Oğuz explained the teeth whitening methods as follows:
“Home-type teeth whitening is a method applied at home and for this process, personalized whitening trays are prepared by taking an impression from inside the mouth. A tooth whitening gel containing 10-15 percent carbamide peroxide or hydrogen peroxide is applied into the prepared trays. These trays are applied for an average of 10-15 days to be used for at least 4-6 hours a day or 8-10 days during night sleep. In-office teeth whitening is a method applied by a dentist in a clinical setting and is often referred to as “laser teeth whitening”. In this method, the whitening gel applied on the teeth is activated by UV light or laser and the process takes an average of one hour. The combined teeth whitening method is applied together at home and in the office environment; it is supported by home whitening for 2-3 days after the whitening procedure performed in the clinic. Single tooth whitening is applied to teeth that have changed color after root canal treatment. In this procedure, whitening gel is placed in the cavity opened by removing the filling of the tooth and the tooth is closed with a temporary filling. This process is repeated at 3-day intervals to achieve the desired color.”
“Colored liquids such as tea, coffee, wine, cola and tobacco products should definitely be avoided”
Dt. Oğuz said, “If the tooth color is close to white and a few shades of lightening is desired, only laser or home whitening may be sufficient. However, if there is a lot of discoloration on the teeth due to smoking, coffee or tea, the combined teeth whitening method is more effective. In order to decide on the appropriate teeth whitening method for the person, a doctor's examination is absolutely necessary. Teeth whitening methods may cause some sensitivity in the teeth. This sensitivity may be to air, very hot or cold foods and drinks. This is a normal and expected side effect. Tooth sensitivity is usually expected to disappear within 24-48 hours. During and for two days after whitening, it is absolutely necessary to stay away from colored liquids such as tea, coffee, wine, cola and tobacco products.”
