Pagers, which have been on the agenda after the attack on Hezbollah members in Lebanon, have long been used by health personnel in Turkey, especially in hospitals, to prevent negative situations that may occur.
After the explosion of pagers used by Hezbollah members in Lebanon in recent days, the reliability of such technological devices has caused controversy. These devices, which are also used in many areas in Turkey, are actively used especially in the health sector. These devices, which are used to eliminate negative situations such as being out of the coverage area during the use of cell phones, alarm in special scenarios such as violence in health, emergency intervention, child or baby abduction or fire. Halil Pak, Emergency Service Responsible Nurse at Private Ankara Middle East Hospital, explained why and for what pagers are used in hospitals.
Stating that pagers are basically used as a means of communication, Pak said in a statement to the UAV correspondent, “It is a warning system used in some special situations in our hospital to quickly and properly perform their duties to the relevant people. We have four previously studied scenarios in our hospital. These scenarios are violence against health workers, intervention to a vital patient, kidnapping a baby or child from the hospital and fire. For these four special scenarios, we have some scenarios that our hospital has previously determined and there are personnel assigned in these scenarios.”
Stating that alarms are automatically sent to the pagers through the switchboard system with the special numbers used by the hospital's intercom phones and that an information message is sent about which area these alarms belong to, Pak said, “The previously assigned personnel who know their duties quickly move to that area and take the necessary equipment with them if necessary.”
Pak noted that thanks to the pagers used to overcome negative situations such as being out of the coverage area during the use of cell phones, the code is sent directly to the relevant personnel, thus preventing any panic and chaos that may occur in the hospital.
Noting that the personnel who joined the hospital first received basic orientation training on the pager, Pak added that the personnel became experienced with the scenarios prepared in advance.
Pointing out that they did not experience any fear in the use of pagers after the armed attack organized over pagers in Lebanon, Pak said, “We did not have any such fear. We are doing our normal duty. Our on-call staff deliver and receive this pager to each other because this pager is very important for us. One of our most important duties is to intervene immediately, and we had no such fear. We continue our duty exactly the same. We have no such fear,” he said.
