Acıbadem Eskişehir Hospital Clinical Psychologist Beste Çokaygil said, “The intense tempo and the work to be completed after a long holiday can cause us to experience ‘Holiday Return Syndrome’. This syndrome can cause symptoms such as lack of motivation, focusing problems, low energy, loss of appetite, sleep problems, easy irritability, intolerance, mental and physical fatigue.”
Psychologist Çokaygil, in his speech on vacation return syndrome, said, “We all dream of having a summer vacation for a whole year. When that day comes, it can be difficult for most people to adapt to work life after a nice summer vacation. The intense tempo and the work to be completed after a long vacation can cause us to experience post-vacation syndrome. This syndrome can cause symptoms such as lack of motivation, focusing problems, low energy, loss of appetite, sleep problems, easy irritability, intolerance, mental and physical fatigue. For people who have problems with their colleagues, do not like their job or have problems in their personal life, a vacation can be an escape plan, but it can be more difficult and longer than others to adapt to routine life when they return. This can lead to these people becoming more depressed. Vacation return syndrome is temporary and may resolve spontaneously after a short period of time. However, if these symptoms persist for a long time and affect the daily life of the person, it is definitely useful to seek help from a specialist.”
“Take care to spend time outside the home and socialize”
Psychologist Çokaygil, who also mentioned the things to be considered in order not to experience holiday return syndrome, continued his speech as follows:
“Finish your vacation 1-2 days before the working day. Instead of returning to your daily routines quickly, try to adapt slowly by giving yourself time. The 1-2 day period will be a great opportunity to restore your sleep patterns and eating habits. Do not lock yourself at home thinking that the vacation is over. Take care to spend time outside the house and socialize. Meet with your favorite friends, spend time with activities that bring you joy. Doing sports, taking light walks during the day will increase your serotonin levels and reduce your stress hormones. Take care to do physical activities outdoors. For the first weekend back from vacation, you can plan mini excursions for yourself and visit nearby attractions. Seeing the same things and order in the house after returning from vacation can be demoralizing. Buying a few small items or rearranging things around the house can create a new living space and bring you joy. Start making plans for your next vacation. This plan will motivate you and make it easier for you to adapt to daily life.”
