A building that will include a pediatric emergency department, operating room and intensive care unit will be built at Akdeniz University Hospital with the contribution of philanthropists. Rector Prof. Dr. Özlenen Özkan said, “Our new pediatric emergency department will provide important contributions not only to Antalya but also to the region.”
Akdeniz University Rector Prof. Dr. Özlenen Özkan and Güzelant İnşaat Ticaret Anonim Şirketi General Manager Rıdvan Güzel signed the Protocol on the Ground Investigation and Preparation of All Application Projects and Construction Work of the Construction of the Pediatric Emergency, Operating Room and Intensive Care Building of Akdeniz University Hospital. Akdeniz University Rector Prof. Dr. Özlenen Özkan, Vice Rector Prof. Dr. Ayşe Gülbin Arıcı, Hospital Chief Physician Prof. Dr. Yıldıray Çete, Secretary General Dr. Ali Evren İmre and Rıdvan Güzel attended the protocol signing ceremony held at the Board of Directors Meeting Hall.
“It will make a significant contribution to the health services of the region”
Akdeniz University Rector Prof. Dr. Özlenen Özkan said, “Today is a day when the contribution of the philanthropic power of our city to our university is once again crowned. Today, we are signing an important protocol for the construction of Akdeniz University Hospital Pediatric Emergency, Operating Room and Intensive Care Building. Within the scope of the protocol, a fully equipped pediatric emergency service consisting of 5 operating rooms, 12-bed intensive care unit and waiting room, triage area, isolated rooms, emergency intervention hall, observation rooms and examination areas will be built. In this context, I would like to extend our endless thanks to Güzelant Construction Trade Inc. Mr. Rıdvan Güzel is instrumental in a beautiful work like his surname. With this protocol we will sign with them today, the new Pediatric Emergency Department, which will be brought to our university, will make important contributions to the health services of not only Antalya but also the region.”
28 thousand children treated in 9 months
Stating that Akdeniz University Hospital provides a very important health service and that there is an intense demand for treatment from all over Turkey and abroad, Rector Özkan said, “In 2023, we served a total of 1 million 441 thousand 668 patients; in 2024, we served 1 million 049 thousand 354 patients between January and September. While there were 39 thousand 951 patients who applied to our pediatric emergency service in 2023, this number has already reached 28 thousand 849 in the first 9 months of 2024. These figures reveal how important the investments in child health are.”
Turkey's state university with the highest donation rate
Stating that universities should grow not only with the economic power of the state, but also with the support of the city and philanthropists, Rector Özkan said, “Only then can we have a more robust and sustainable structure. Since the day we took office, I have emphasized the importance of establishing strong ties between our university and the city. As Akdeniz University, we should make more use of the philanthropic power of Antalya. Antalya is one of Turkey's most donor-driven cities, especially in the field of national education. However, in the past, this great potential was not sufficiently reflected in our university. We have made great efforts to change this situation and today we are reaping the fruits of these efforts. The fact that our university was ranked as the state university with the highest donation rate in Turkey in the 2024 YÖK Monitoring and Evaluation Report is a result of these efforts. Our university is reintegrating with the city and strengthening its power with the support of philanthropists. On this occasion, I would like to take this opportunity to once again thank our benefactor who is with us today and who has not withheld his support, and I emphasize that we will continue our mission to bring the philanthropic power of Antalya together with our university. Akdeniz University will rise even higher as one of the biggest brands of our city with our cooperation.”
“Someone needs to say that there is such a deficiency, let's do it”
Rıdvan Güzel, General Manager of a private company, thanked those who were instrumental in the donation and said, “I didn't know there was such a need. People's hearts are closed. Someone has to be instrumental in these donations. I think many people can volunteer for good works, but someone has to say that there is such a lack, let's do it. I thank you very much for making me instrumental in such a thing.”
