Peer bullying has a bad impact on children

Psychologist Sevim Buzkan Ertuğrul from Kayseri Acıbadem Hospital said that children who are subjected to peer bullying in primary and secondary school periods experience conditions such as anxiety and depression in later years if they do not receive psychological support.

Stating that peer bullying is the aggressive behavior of one or more children to another child, Psychologist Sevim Buzkan Ertuğrul said, “The fact that these behaviors are aggressive, have a power imbalance and are continuous constitutes peer bullying. In other words, we do not call every behavior peer bullying. These 3 behaviors must occur. Starting from preschool period, it increases towards the end of primary school. This increase increases significantly at the end of middle school and starts to decrease at the end of high school. There are different types of peer bullying. These are physical, verbal, social, sexual and emotional. With these distinctions, peer bullying variations are seen. Children who bully have some characteristics. These are anger control problems, impulsive behavior and lack of empathy. Children who are bullies have some characteristics. These are introverted nature, lack of self-confidence, difficulties in expressing themselves and various borderline stances. These are manifested by characteristics such as being overweight or being weak.”

Stating that conditions such as anxiety disorder and depression are common in children who are bullied in the following years, Ertuğrul said, “Parents of bullied children should definitely talk to their children first. They should establish good communication with their children. We should support the child socially and emotionally. We should definitely inform the school about this issue and we recommend that they get support from a psychological specialist along with social and emotional support. Because anxiety disorders and depression are quite common in such children. Children who are bullied should also be supported socially and emotionally. They need to be made aware of this issue. Again, it is absolutely necessary to inform the school and guidance service about this issue. It is also useful to ensure that they receive psychological support.”
