Specialist from SANKO University Hospital. Physiotherapist Selver Seval Ergücen said that pelvic floor rehabilitation is an investment in health.
Pelvic floor muscles are located in the inner layer of the pelvis, bladder, uterus, prostate, rectum (the last part of the intestine), etc. Stating that it is a muscle group that supports organs, Uzm. Physiotherapist Ergücen said, “Pelvic floor muscles that cannot function properly weaken or cannot manage the relaxation phase correctly. As a result, urinary incontinence, constipation, pelvic pain, sexual dysfunctions, pelvic organ prolapse, inability to empty urine can be seen.”
What is pelvic floor rehabilitation
Uzm. Physiotherapist Ergücen stated that pelvic floor rehabilitation is a set of exercises aimed at strengthening the pelvic floor muscles and gaining functionality, various breathing techniques, manual therapy, biofeedback training, electrical stimulation, behavioral therapy techniques, healthy bladder and bowel training, which helps to improve the quality of life of patients and help the pelvic floor muscles to fulfill their normal functions.
What is preventive pelvic floor rehabilitation
Explaining that regular strengthening and proper exercise of the pelvic floor muscles, defined as preventive pelvic floor rehabilitation, helps prevent loss of function of the pelvic floor muscles, Uzm. Physiotherapist Ergücen listed those who will especially benefit from this rehabilitation and its benefits as follows:
“Pregnancy and childbirth can cause weakening of the pelvic floor muscles and urinary incontinence problems. Sagging of the pelvic floor muscles can also be seen due to strain during childbirth. Pelvic floor muscles lose strength with age. Pelvic floor rehabilitation slows down age-related muscle weakening and can prevent problems such as urinary incontinence. Strong pelvic floor muscles of individuals who are interested in physical activity and sports such as heavy lifting can prevent injuries and muscle strain. Structurally and genetically, some individuals are more prone to pelvic floor problems. Regular pelvic floor training prevents problems that individuals may experience in the future. If pelvic floor problems cannot be solved, surgical intervention may be required. Rehabilitation can reduce surgical risks and needs. Strong pelvic floor muscles balance intra-abdominal pressure and support posture. It also improves bladder and bowel control and has an impact on general health.”
Underlining that the preventive application of pelvic floor rehabilitation is an important investment that can be made to protect the individual's health in the long term, Uzm. Physiotherapist Ergücen concluded his words as follows:
“Strengthening the muscles not only reduces existing complaints, but also contributes to maintaining the long-term function of the organs in this region. You should consult a pelvic floor therapist to maintain and improve your quality of life.”
